Liberal politics

Papers relating to the Liberal Party of Wales during the 1950s and 1960s, including leaflets and election addresses when Glyn Tegai Hughes stood as a Liberal candidate in the Denbigh Parliamentary Division at the 1950, 1955 and 1959 General Elections; papers relating to his campaigns and television broadcasts in 1959; agenda and minutes of meetings, together with papers and letters relating to the Liberal Party of Wales and the North Wales Liberal Federation (mainly in his capacity as Chairman to both during the 1960s).
Also, letters received (with some copies or drafts of his replies), including from G. W. Madoc Jones (Honorary Secretary of The Liberal Party of Wales); Emlyn Thomas (Secretary of The Welsh Liberal Party); Emlyn Hooson MP; a folder containing interview notes and correspondence, 1954-1955, between Sir Henry Morris-Jones and Madoc Jones, regarding Sir Henry’s forthcoming book [in box 6]; and a letter from Dafydd Miles, Organizer of Ymgyrch Senedd i Gymru, 10 September 1952 [located in an envelope marked “Denbigh & Election Broadcasts” in box 6].
The papers are of interest to those interested in the development of the Liberal Party in Wales and their policies during this time, as they include a draft entitled ‘The Liberal Policy for Wales’ with a copy of Glyn Tegai Hughes’s comments on the draft statement addressed to Emrys Roberts MP, dated 28 May 1949 (page 2 missing), with further correspondence on the subject regarding Liberal policy for a Welsh parliament, which culminates with a copy of a ‘Draft Bill for the Establishment of a Parliament of Wales’ by Martin Thomas, August 1966 and the evidence presented by The Welsh Liberal Party to the Royal Commission on the Constitution in 1969. Also, copies of the constitution of the Liberal Party of Wales adopted by the party at Aberystwyth in May 1950, and constitution of the North Wales Liberal Federation (with subsequent amendments to both constitutions); draft manifestos of The Liberal Party of Wales, including a manuscript draft of the 1963 manifesto in the hand of Glyn Tegai Hughes and a bilingual typescript draft; and programmes of the annual Liberal Schools held at Pantyfedwen, Borth during the late 1950s.
Also includes newspaper cuttings and printed material, including ‘The Future of the Small Farmer’ by S. O. Thomas (Liberal Party of Wales Publications No. 1, 1956).

S4C and Mentrau Cyf.

Consists of correspondence relating to Glyn Tegai Hughes’s appointment as a member of the Welsh Fourth Channel Authority (S4C), correspondence with officers of S4C and some relating to broadcasting in general, together with a pack containing press releases relating to the launch of S4C on 1 March 1982, including 6 photographs of the original Authority members, officers and staff of S4C. Also includes copies of minutes of the Directors’ meetings and other meetings of Mentrau Cyf. for 1983-1984 and three typescript copies of a lecture entitled ‘Broadcasting and its future’ given by Glyn Tegai Hughes at the Broadcasting House, Llandaff, 1 October 1975.

Islwyn

Research papers relating to Islwyn (William Thomas, 1832-1878). Glyn Tegai Hughes published 'Islwyn' (as part of the series Dawn dweud) by Gwasg Prifysgol Cymru, Cardiff in 2003.

Wales and Germany

The box consists of two folders marked 'Wales in German Literature' containing research papers on Wales and Germany and 15 photographic slides, together with drafts of talks/articles given on the subject, c. 1956-1995. Also, an envelope containing a typescript copy of a translation of Günter Grass' Katz und Maus into Welsh by Gwilym Lloyd Edwards, together with correspondence relating to the work, 1987-1994. Gwilym Lloyd Edwards won a competition at the 1981 National Eisteddfod and the work was published under the Cynllun Comisiynau'r Eisteddfod (Eisteddfod Commissions Scheme) as Cath a Llygoden in 1994.

Various subjects III

The box contains an envelope containing an article written by GTH on William Williams Pantycelyn, published in Y Gwyddonydd in Spring 1992 and a folder of research papers on the Blayney family, with a copy of an article GTH published in Montgomeryshire Collections in 2007 and a text of a lecture delivered on the subject.

Includes school reports (Newtown Council School, 1931-1933; Towyn School, 1934-1937; The Liverpool Institute, 1937-1939; Manchester Grammar School, 1939-1941); school and university certificates; papers relating to his time with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, including his Soldier's Service and Pay book, Officers' Mess bills, 1942-1945, and intelligence notebook; identity card; passports (2); autograph book on his retirement as Chairman of the Broadcasting Council for Wales, 1979; biographical notes; and Service of Thanksgiving leaflet, 2017, printed at Gregynog.

Letters II

Consists of folders containing letters from Edward Arnold (Publishers) Ltd., 1958-1985; Emlyn Hooson, 1992-2013; Hugh Toller, 2001-2010; and David Barnes, 2003, with drafts of his chapter on Montgomeryshire.

Gregynog

Papers relating to Gregynog Hall, including some historical records. Glyn Tegai Hughes was appointed in 1964 as the first warden of Gregynog Hall after Margaret Davies gifted Gregynog to the University of Wales in 1960.

Six folders and one envelope consisting of copies of articles, printouts and notes on the following subjects: hymns; 1904/05 Revival; Methodists in Montgomeryshire and other Christian denominations in Wales (includes a copy of Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd, December 1841); Sir John Pryse (aka John Pryse or John Price) of Newtown Hall; preaching in Wales (includes a copy of Pulpud Coffa Y Parch John Evans, Eglwysbach: Anerchiadau’r Ŵyl Goffa, 1922 and five plates of Rev John Evans); ‘A Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland’, including correspondence, 1996-2005, with its editor, Dr John A. Vickers relating to Glyn Tegai Hughes’s entries for the Dictionary, and with Revd Dr Owen E. Evans; and material relating to Gwarchod y Gair: Cyfrol Goffa Y Parchedig Griffith Thomas Roberts, edited by Owen E. Evans, 1993 (includes a letter addressed to Glyn Tegai Hughes from Griffith Thomas Roberts, dated 17 September 1947).

The box contains a folder of letters with the editors of Comparative Criticism, 1979-1983, including a copy of ‘Bibliography of Comparative Literature’ compiled by GTH; an envelope containing correspondence, 1982-1983, with Prof. Jeffrey M. Peck, University of Washington relating to his hermeneutics bibliography published in Comparative Criticism. Also research papers on Augustine Mathewes (c. 1594-1654); Twm Siambar Wen; mountains (mainly for a programme held at Gregynog in 1983); and an envelope marked ‘Gweinidogion’ containing material relating to an index to Yr Eurgrawn, 2005 and copies of Llawlyfr y Gymanfa (Yr Eglwys Fethodistaidd) for 1945 and 1947. In addition, a folder of reader’s reports prepared by GTH for University of Wales Press and Welsh Arts Council / The Arts Council of Wales, together with related correspondence, 1983-1998.

Diaries

Diaries for 1931-1940, 1943, 1946-1959-60 (two for 1936 and 1938 and none for 1941, 1942, 1944 and 1945). Journals were kept between May 1942 and September 1944 (1 vol.), July-September 1945 (2 vols), and August-November 1946 (1 vol.).

Letters III

Consists of a loose bundle of letters addressed to GTH, 1965-2014 and a folder of material relating to B. S. Johnson [Bryan Stanley William Johnson], 1970-2014, including letters from him, 1970-1973, and typescript of some of the material he wrote at Gregynog.
