Scope and content
Original manuscript of Richard Llewellyn's novel How Green Was My Valley (London: Michael Joseph, 1939), bearing considerable revision by the author and including a rejected draft conclusion (f. 300).
It is complete except for seven leaves. According to a note on f. 183 verso, six [?recte eight] leaves were removed for a 1939 book exhibition; one of these (now f. 183) was found loose inside an uncorrected proof copy of the book, acquired by NLW in 1988, and subsequently returned to the original manuscript. The text is written on the rectos, with revisions occasionally being written on the versos opposite. Also included are sketches, doodles and portraits by the author, some perhaps depicting characters in the novel (ff. 142, 166 verso, 169 recto-verso, 170 verso, 174 verso, 178 verso, 180, 192 verso, 194 verso, 211, 216 verso, 224 verso, 225 verso, 226 verso, 231 verso, 233 verso, 274 verso, 281 verso, 282 verso, 284 verso, 298 verso). Included with the volume are ten photographs of the author (NLW MS 22669E (b)-(k)), sent to Bertram Rota by Swarbrick Studios in 1940 (see enclosed letter, dated 5 July 1940, now NLW MS 22669E (a)).
