John Gwyn: Military memoirs

  • NLW MS 22632A
  • Ffeil
  • [1679] x [1682]

A volume containing an autobiographical account by John Gwyn (fl. 1660, DNB) of Trelydan, Guilsfield, co. Montgomery, a captain in the Royal Regiment of Guards, of his military career during the English Civil War, prefaced by dedicatory epistles to the king, the dukes of York, Buckingham, Monmouth, Albermarle, the earls of Pembroke, Maxenfield [? Macclesfield], the officers of the Board of Green Cloth, Sir John Salsbury, and Colonel [? Thomas Salusbury]. One of several copies probably written, [1679] x [1682], by a professional scribe for Gwyn's patrons. The text, probably from Cardiff MS 2.269, was edited by Walter Scott in Military memoirs of the great Civil War being the military memoirs of John Gwynne (Edinburgh, 1822) and by Norman Tucker in Military memoirs, the Civil War: Richard Atkyns and John Gwynne (London, 1967). Notes comparing the manuscript with Scott's edition, found loose within the volume, have been tipped in at the end.
