Scope and content

Writ Of Mandamus issued to John [Egerton], bishop of Durham, to command the Sheriff of co. Durham to deliver to Thomas Brown and Caleb Whitfoord, all the goods and chattles, of Sir James Pennyman, bart, and a moiety of his tmt's and lands in the sheriff's bailiwick, to hold as their freehold until they shall have fully levied the debts and damages. Recites that T.B. and C.W. by judgement of the Court at Westminster recovered against Sir James Pennyman, £800 of debt and 63s. damages; that the Sheriff of Middlesex had returned that Sir James had no goods or chattles in his Bailiwick to pay debt; that Sir James has sufficient goods and lands within Bishopric of Durham to pay debt.
