Leanne Wood is a Welsh politician who served as the leader of Plaid Cymru from 2012 to 2018, and as a Member of the National Assembly for Wales for South Wales Central from 2003 to 2016 and as Assembly Member and Member of the Senedd for Rhondda from 2016 to 2021. She was Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly for Wales in 2016. She was also a councillor on Rhondda Cynon Taff Council for Penygraig between 1995 and 1999 and stood for Plaid Cymru in the General Elections in 1997 and 2001. She was the first women to lead Plaid Cymru and became well known outside Wales due to her participation in UK wide television debates during the 2015 General Election campaign. Leanne Wood is a socialist and a republican.
