A book into which Peter Bailey Williams of Llanrug copied Welsh poetry between 1799 and 1834. A volume of transcripts of miscellaneous poems in English, Latin, and Welsh. The Welsh verse consists of one 'cywydd' each by Davydd Nanmor, Gr[uffydd] ap Ieuan, Iolo Goch, Ll[ewely]n ap Holl ap Ieuan ap Gronwy, and Mredydd ap Rys, and some thirty 'englynion', all anonymous except one which is attributed to Gruffith Llwyd. As marginalia or on blank pages, etc., and generally in a later hand than the text of the poems, are various inscribed names (see note below) and memoranda, including a copy of a note signed by Edward David, Evenechtyd.

Two volumes of transcripts, [1758], compiled Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd), subsequently bound as one volume. Part I (foliated 1-153) contains 'The Gododin an Heroic poem of the sixth Century transcribed from a Copy of Thomas Wiliams of Trefriw M.D., and the Works of Taliessin from Dr Davies of Mallwyd's hand, and other particulars wrote by the Revd Mr. Evan Evans' (f. 1) and includes transcripts of Llyfr Aneirin (ff. 5 verso-36), Llyfr Taliesin (ff. 37-126) and other manuscripts.

A volume containing transcripts of Welsh verse in strict metre (consisting mainly of 'cywyddau') transcribed, October [18]89 - February [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes] [newspaper proprietor and publisher]. Many of the poems are annotated to indicate that they were copied out of a volume in the possession of 'W.J.' of Llangollen, and the whole work appears to be an incomplete transcript of NLW MS 670D, which itself consists of a collection of Welsh poems transcribed by William Jones ('Bleddyn'), antiquary, local historian, etc., of Llangollen. A second note on the same page indicates that, similarly, fourteen 'cywyddau' by Tudur Aled had not been transcribed in the present volume, but had been copied into another book, with the intention of publishing these and other poems by the same bard, together with poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur. In fact, fourteen 'cywyddau' and four other poems by Tudur Aled, and all of the poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur, which appear in NLW MS 670D, have been omitted from the present volume, the presence of poems by the two latter bards in NLW MS 670D being usually indicated by the transcriber by quoting the title, or title and first line, of such works. A note on p. 153 states that eighty ' cywyddau' by Dafydd ap Gwilym [which appeared in William Jones's book, i.e ., NLW MS 670D, pp. 149-263], had been used to correct the published edition of that poet's work ('Yma daw LXXX Cywydd o waith Dafydd ab Gwilym, y rhai a ddefnyddiwyd i gywiro ei waith argraffedig'). These eighty poems, and also five retaliatory poems composed by Gruffydd Grug, in a poetic contention with Dafydd ap Gwilym, and found interspersed among the eighty 'cywyddau', have been omitted from the present volume. A further note on p. 264 states that the last three 'cywyddau' [in NLW MS 670D] had not been copied, as the transcriber believed the text to be so corrupt, that they did not merit transcription. A fly-leaf is marked 'Bk i', and this possibly connects the volume with NLW MS 19313, which, marked on a fly-leaf 'Bk ii', consists of a similar volume of Welsh verse transcribed, March - April [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes], again, by inference, from a book in the possession of W[illiam] J[ones].

A seventeenth and early eighteenth century manuscript of Welsh and English poetry, medical recipes, prophecies attributed to Myrddin and Taliesin, triads, and later additions of a miscellaneous nature. The volume is in several hands, and some of the additions seem to be in the autograph of Richard Wiliams, soap boiler, of Abergavenny. According to a note on the cover (see 561, below) it belonged to the Catholic Chapel, Abergavenny, and much of the contents is of Catholic interest. The free-metre poems include a satire upon legal proceedings (in a mixture of Welsh and English), a dialogue in two hundred and twenty-three stanzas of 'triban' metre between a Catholic and a Protestant, a poem consoling members of the Holy Church in persecution, a poem in 'triban' metre by Henry Williams, a Christmas carol, and an elegy on the death of David Lewis, Catholic martyr, 1679. The poems in strict metres contain 'cywyddau' by Sion y Kent, Ievan Deylwyn, Lewis Glynn Kothi, Ievan Tew Brydydd, Robin Du o Fon, Rys Nanmor and others, and a number of 'englynion' in Welsh and English, including satires upon Puritans. The English poems include 'An Hymne on our Saviour Christ's Ascension' and 'An Epitaph vpon the Death of John Pym'. The miscellaneous material at the beginning of the volume includes material of Brecknockshire interest; a presentment of Popish recusants in Monkstreet ward in the town of Abergavenny, 1709; medical recipes; and a precept relating to the House of Correction in Brecknockshire, 1670.

The transcripts were written on two fly-leaves of Thomas Stanley: History of Philosophy, London, 1655, in the original binding with the words 'E Libris ... Salesbury e Coll: Jesu Oxon'. on the inside front cover. Three sons [William, John, and Gabriel] of Owen Salesbury of Rug matriculated at Jesus College between 1656 abd 1658.

An exercise-book marked on the first page 'Copy No. 16' containing transcripts probably by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of poetry by Evan Pritchard ('Ieuan Lleyn'; 1769-1832), with one or two items by John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), W[illia]m T[h]omas [?1790-1861] and William Williams. The final item ('Cywydd St. Cowrda' by [Hywel Rheinallt]) has no name appended to it and is incomplete. The poems appear to have been transcribed in separate sections and put together later.

A volume containing 'cywyddau' and some 'englynion' by John Philips, Edmwnd Prys, Lewis Glyn Cothi, M'edydd ap R's, [? Huw Arwystli], ?Thomas Derllysc, Tudur Aled, John Tudyr, John Mowddwy, and Ifan Tew, and an imperfect 'cywydd'. Pp. 41-5, as stated by J. H. Davies in a note on the inside lower cover (and not pp. 35-9 as suggested by J. Gwenogvryn Evans) are in the hand of Sion Tudur. J. H. Davies has also stated, and J. Gwenogvryn Evans also suggested, that pp. 1-17 are in the hand of Edmwnd Prys, but this section is in fact in two hands (pp. 1-9, 9-17), neither of which resembles that of Prys. There are some additions in the hand of David Ellis, Cricieth (1736-95) and some marginal and other additions by Peter Bailey Williams (1763-1836), Llanrug.

The remainder is in several hands of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. There are copious annotations by William Maurice and some additions and annotations by Cadwaladr Dafydd, Llanymowddwy (1747) and L[ewis] Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn', 1701-65).

The third part of the manuscript contains a transcript of the text of 'Y Gododdin' ('Y Gwawdodyn') in old and modern orthography; an 'awdl' in English ('O michti Ladi, our leding...') by Ieuan ap Rhydderch ap Ieuan Llwyd ('o Ogerddan') or Ieuan ap Hywel Swrdwal, transcribed in 1785 from a manuscript of John Jones (Sion ap Wiliam Sion), Gell[i] Lyfrdy [sic]; and 'cywyddau' and an 'awdl' by Sion Phylip, Huw Arwystl, Sion Keri, Sion Tudur, Ieuan Tew Ieuaf, Sion Tudur ('o Wicwar'), Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Sion Mowddwy, Lewis Glyn Cothi, Sion Dafydd Siancyn, Risart Phylip, and Huw Llwyd Cynfel. At the end of the manuscript is a progressive list of poems ('Cynnwysiad') contained in the second section, an alphabetical index ('Cynnwysiad llyth'rennol') of first lines, an index of poets ('Enwau'r Beirdd') and a progressive list of poems ('Cynnwysiad') contained in the third section, all in the hand of David Ellis, together with an incomplete list of poets contained in the second section in the hand of Owen Williams, Waunfawr ('Owain Gwyrfai'). There are numerous additions, variants, and annotations in the hands of Owen Williams, P[eter Bailey] W[illiams], [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), and [Professor Thomas Gwynn Jones]. The manuscript is bound uniformly with Cwrtmawr MS 10 and 12 and the spine is lettered 'Dafydd Ellis MS'.
