Scope and content
'No.1' copy of William Owen [Pughe], A Dictionary of the Welsh Language, Explained in English…, 1st edn, 2 vols (London: Printed for E. Williams, 1803, Libri Walliae 4188, 4190), with authorial annotations, [1803x1832].
The first volume (NLW MS 24211iC) consists of 'A Grammar of the Welsh Language' (ff. 5-90 verso) with annotations in pencil and ink on some twenty-two pages (ff. 7-48 passim), 'The Introduction to the Welsh Dictionary' (ff. 92-98 verso) and the dictionary, letters A-F (ff. 100-392 verso), with pencil and ink annotations on sixty-eight pages. The second volume (NLW MS 24211iiC) consists of letters G-Y (ff. 1-330 verso) with pencil and ink annotations on twenty-nine pages (ff. 26-298 passim), together with a single page of Addenda (f. 331), many of which correspond with the annotations in volume 1. Most of the annotations recorded in the outer margins have been trimmed, some very extensively, during binding. A copy of the 1831 engraving of Idrison [i.e. Owen Pughe] by T. George and R. Woodman has been pasted in on NLW MS 24211iC, f. ii verso. Miscellaneous notes, in several hands, found loose in the first volume have been placed in an archival envelope (NLW MS 24211iC, ff. 394-398).
