= Material relating to John Meirion Morris' occasional duties as a stage producer while he was working as an art teacher at Llanidloes Secondary School, 1961-1964, and as a lecturer in the Education Department of University College of Wales Aberystwyth, 1968-1978. The productions are: 'The Pirates of Penzance' by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert (produced by John Meirion Morris and performed by Llanidloes Amateur Operatic Society, 1963); 'Iolanthe' by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. The material includes correspondence, printed programmes, press cuttings and photographs. Amongst the correspondents are Myrddin ap Dafydd; Emyr Llywelyn; the producer, director and television company founder Wil Aaron, and the singer, writer and broadcaster Amy Parry-Williams. Also included are background notes on the material in the hand of Gwawr Morris, widow of John Meirion Morris.

Drama deledu,

First draft, [1940s], of an unfinished television play in Welsh by Saunders Lewis, based on the novel Journal d'un curé de campagne (Paris, 1936) by Georges Bernanos. A note, 1975, by Saunders Lewis (f. ii) explains why the play was never completed.

Excelsior gan Saunders Lewis

A typescript copy, [1962]-1979, of Saunders Lewis's Welsh play 'Excelsior', first published Swansea, 1980, with corrections in the author's hand (ff. 1-56); together with correspondence, 1980, in English and Welsh, of the publisher Christopher Davies, regarding its publication in view of the allegation, when broadcast in 1962, that it libelled the Rev. Llywelyn Williams, MP (ff. 57-81).
The typescript consists of pages from the original script, [1962], transmitted on BBC TV on St David's Day 1962 (ff. 5-16, 20-21, 42-51), interspersed with revised sections, [1979], for an abortive stage version (ff. 17-19, 22-41, 52-56), and the new Preface for the published volume, April 1980 (ff. 2-4). The correspondence consists of nineteen letters, April-October 1980, including copies and drafts, mostly between Saunders Lewis, Christopher Davies, Sir Alun Talfan Davies and Glyndwr Williams, brother of Llywelyn Williams. A cutting of Clive Betts' article, 'Saunders Lewis publishes play BBC abandoned' (Western Mail, 1 December 1980, p. 9), is on f. 82. The 1962 and 1980 versions of the play both appear in Dramâu Saunders Lewis: Y Casgliad Cyflawn, Cyfrol 2, ed. by Ioan M. Williams (Cardiff, 2000), pp. 273-414.

Lewis, Saunders, 1893-1985

Notes & fragments,

An exercise book and loose papers containing notes and drafts made by Saunders Lewis, [c. 1970], when working on two plays in Welsh, one based on the life of St Catherine of Siena (d. 1380) and the other on the life of the nuclear physicist Niels Bohr (1885-1962). Neither of these plays appears to have been completed. Also included (ff. 39-52) are notes for, and a fragmentary draft of, a play set in the Pope's palace at Orvieto, 1281.

Printer's copy of Y Cyrnol Chabert (Pen-y-groes: Gwasg Dwyfor, 1989), bearing emendations by R. Geraint Gruffydd, literary executor of Saunders Lewis. The copy is a photocopy of a typescript containing minor revisions by the author. 'Darlledwyd gyntaf ar Radio Cymru, B.B.C., 5 Mawrth 1970' (f. i) is presumably incorrect (see MS 22957C).
