History
In 1982, the Secretary of State for Wales established the Wales Advisory Body for Higher Education; it comprised a Committee and a Board. The Committee advised the Secretary of State on the apportionment of the advanced further education pool, advanced course approval, and teacher training; and also to monitor local education authorities and liaise with university and voluntary sectors of higher education. The Committee comprised a chairman, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, and eight local authority elected members. The Board was responsible for assessing provision for local higher education in Wales and advising the committee of its recommendations; it consisted of representatives from industry, business and education. The Committee and Board were supported by advisory panels and working groups concerned with the finance and the advanced further education pool, advanced course approval and programme review, teacher training, and a Chairman's Study Group. In 1989, the Board was replaced by the Standing Working Group. The Wales Advisory Body itself was dissolved in April 1992, and it was replaced by the Welsh Funding Councils.
