Sir Evan Davies Jones, civil engineer and public figure, was born at Pentower, Fishgurd. In his capacity of civil engineer he worked on the Severn Tunnel and the Manchester Ship Canal, eventually becoming managing director of the internationally-renowned Topham, Jones, & Railton firm. Evan Davies Jones served both his native county and country in numerous capacities. He was elected High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire from 1911 to 1912 and in 1932 was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the county; he also represented Pembrokeshire as Member of Parliament from 1918 to 1922. He served in a governing capacity within the Church in Wales, the University of Wales and the National Library of Wales, the latter institution benefitting from donations from Evan Davies Jones's extensive private library.
