History

David Howell and Gertrude Jones appear to have married in the September quarter of 1901 (GRO marriage indexes, Sept. 1901, Aberystwyth reg. dist., 11b, 63). Gwendoline Marjorie Howell (b. 1906) was the daughter of Elsie Maud Thomson, adopted by her husband W. Edward Thomson, and subsequently adopted by David and Gertrude Howell of Cwmcynfelyn in 1909. Gertrude Howell died 25 April 1915, and her husband David Howell died 28 Sept. 1919, both leaving estates in trust for Marjorie, their only child. Marjorie’s birth appears not to have been registered, and for the purposes of coming-of-age she was later given the court-appointed date of birth of 22 Dec. 1906. W. Edward Thomson, the original adoptive father, is assumed to have died between 1909 and 1911, as according to the GRO marriage indexes, Elsie M. Hodges (sic.) married Anderson W. Blew (c.1866-1935) in the September quarter of 1911 (Paddington, 1a, 184); Elsie M. Blew went on to marry John Murdoch in the June quarter of 1939 (Camberwell, 1d, 1829).
