A volume containing journals of tours through parts of Wales, [27] July-11 August 1812 (ff. 1-45), and along the South Devon coast, 9-[20] August 1813 (ff. 46-71), by W[illiam] Evill of 12 Devonshire Buildings, Bath.
The Welsh tour consists of a journey from the New Passage, Monmouthshire, through Abergavenny, Brecon and Rhayader to Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, northwards through Talyllyn, Harlech, Maentwrog and Bala, all Merionethshire, on to Llangollen, then south through Shropshire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, crossing the River Severn at the Old Passage. The Devon tour consists of a journey from Bath, via Glastonbury and Exeter, to Plymouth, Devon, followed by the journey along the coast from Teignmouth, Devon, to Weymouth, Dorset. The writer describes becoming lost on the roads to and from Builth Wells (ff. 8 verso-11), climbing Cader Idris (ff. 19-21), the rivalry of innkeepers in Barmouth (f. 23 recto-verso), the sights of Llangollen (ff. 30-33), and visits to Mount Edgcumbe, Cornwall (ff. 54 verso-56 verso), Devonport Royal Dockyard (ff. 57-59) and the partly completed Plymouth Breakwater (f. 59 recto-verso). There are also a few comments on French prisoners seen at Abergavenny (f. 7) and Oswestry (f. 34). Three hand-drawn maps showing the itinerary of the tours have been tipped into the volume (ff. 2 verso, 16, 47 verso). Engravings depicting English and Welsh views have been pasted into the volume; a minority of these relate to the tours (ff. i verso, 3, 43, 45 recto-verso, 72).

Papers, 1954-1975, of the Rev. R. M. Verity, Vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, relating mainly to the funeral of Augustus John in November 1961 and the unveiling of the memorial to him in Fordingbridge in 1967.
The papers include letters to Verity from the John family, comprising eight letters and a postcard from Dorelia John, 1955-1969, four letters from Admiral Sir Caspar John, 1961-1967, one letter from Romilly John, 1969, and three Christmas cards and a telegram from Augustus and Dorelia, 1956-1958. Also included are Augustus John's burial certificate, Verity's notes for the memorial service [?and funeral] and printed material including catalogues, 1954, 1975, newspaper cuttings, 1954-1970, invitations, printed orders of service and a copy of the volume The Drawings of Augustus John, introd. by Stephen Longstreet (Alhambra, Calif., 1967).

Eighty letters, 1939-1966, to John Davenport, literary critic and friend of Dylan Thomas, much of the correspondence relating to literary matters (ff. 1-91). There are references to Thomas throughout, including detailed (and contrasting) accounts, by John Malcolm Brinnin (ff. 12-13) and George Reavey (ff. 71-72 verso), of events surrounding his death.

Also included are further papers relating to Dylan Thomas, comprising manuscript notes by Davenport, [1956x1966] (ff. 92-100); a postcard, [?1950], to Thomas from Jack Lindsay in Prague (f. 101); a typescript, 10 November 1953, of a radio obituary to Thomas by Davenport (ff. 102-104); a typescript article, [mid-1950s], on Thomas by Davenport (ff. 105-114); and press cuttings, 1954-1965 (ff. 115-121). Three of the Kingsley Amis letters (ff. 1, 2, 4) are published in The Letters of Kingsley Amis, ed. by Zachary Leader (London, 2000) (pp. 448-50, 464-5, 527-8).

Incomplete autograph manuscript, 1916-1928, by Josef Charles Holbrooke of his three-act opera Bronwen (op. 75), being the third and final part of his operatic trilogy The Cauldron of Annwn; Act I is lacking. The libretto, based on the narratives of The Four Branches of the Mabinogi, was written by Holbrooke's patron, Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, eighth baron Howard de Walden.
Mostly composed at Harlech, the work was completed in parts, the Overture (MS 23863F) (published as a piano arrangement in 1917), here dated July 1916 (p. 17); Act II (MS 23864F) dated 5 August 1918 (p. 183); and Act III (MS 23865F), dated 12 October [19]24 (p. 295); the latter is probably the completion date of the full score (confirmed by the note at the end of the published version of 1929), as opposed to the vocal score of the opera, which was apparently completed at Harlech on 5 February 1920 (see note at end of the published vocal score (1922), and cf. George Lowe, Josef Holbrooke and His Work (London, 1920), p. 273). However, a note added at the end of the Prelude to Act III (MS 23865F, p. 190) suggests that a final revision was made in 1928. The vocal score was first published, with English and German words, as Bronwen: A Music Drama (No. 3) (London, 1922), and the full score in 1929 (see British Library Catalogue of Printed Music); the opera was first performed by the Carl Rosa Opera Company in Huddersfield on 1 February 1929.

A pocket-book, 1829-55, of John Davies (b. c. 1804), Quarry, parish of Clydau, co. Pembroke, shoemaker, mainly recording names of preachers, with texts of sermons, at Pontgarreg, Cenarth, and other Calvinistic Methodist chapels, as well as at Association and other CM meetings, in counties Carmarthen and Pembroke, together with occasional references to family and local events. The volume also includes transcripts of hymns and other verse, and other miscellaneous memoranda.

A volume containing poetry, mostly in Welsh, by William Edwards ('Cynlaisfab', d. 1920s), Glantawe, Ystradgynlais, co. Brecon, and afterwards of Blaengwynfi, co. Glamorgan, composed 1869-1920 and including poems entered for competition at local eisteddfodau. An index to the poems is included on the front and back covers and end-papers.

Notes and sketches by the Reverend Elias Owen (1833-99), vicar of Efenechdyd, 1881-92, probably compiled in preparation for his work Old Stone Crosses of the Vale of Clwyd and neighbouring parishes ... (London, [1886]), together with two letters to him from the Reverend the Honourable Albert Victor Lyttelton, curate of Hawarden, 1879, and the Reverend John Edward Hill, vicar of Welshpool, 1885.

Some thirty letters, 1902-3, from Gwynydd Sisson (d. 1909), wife of the Reverend Lewis Pryce (1873-1930), Wrecsam. Addressed to her mother Cornelia Elizabeth Sisson, Plas Gwilym, Wrecsam, they contain news of her stay in India.

Glamorgan, MS 23281 being arranged according to location and MS 23282 being a catalogue of books relating to Wales, arranged according to author and title, with manuscript additions to 1970.

The memoirs of William Andreas Jones (1907-91), Llanrug, co. Caernarfon, written in Welsh, 1980s, and including an account of his early years in London, his involvement with the Bootle branch of the League of Nations Union, and his work as a member of staff of the Ministry of Agriculture in counties Caernarfon, Glamorgan and Monmouth.

The journal of William Williams (1774-1839), sometime MP for Weymouth and Melcomb Regis, co. Dorset, describing a walking tour through Wales and to Liverpool and Chester, May-June 1796, accompanied by the Reverend James Burgess. A note on f. i verso - 'The following Copy was made from the original Tour by a Welsh servant, not well acquainted with the English language. Hence the errors in spelling & grammar, with which it abounds' - is in the same hand as the final paragraph of the narrative and as emendations and additions to the text. Other additions, mainly on the blank dorse of folios, are in a different hand, possibly that of James Burgess.

A mid twentieth-century typescript copy of the journal of the Liberal politician and educational reformer Sir Arthur Herbert Dyke Acland (1847-1926), MP for Rotherham, 1885-99, marked 'volume i' and covering the period 26 January 1871 - 27 March 1898. The journal, which contains details of personal, family and political matters, consists mainly of intermittent entries, mostly written retrospectively and often lengthy.
