History
Edward Stanton Roberts was born in Cynwyd, Denbighshire, in 1878. Following his graduation from the Normal College, Bangor in 1898 he taught successively at schools in Harrington, Ponciau (near Rhosllanerchrugog) and Liverpool before being appointed assistant principal at Glanadda School, Bangor, in 1907. That same year, he enrolled as a student at University College Aberystwyth, graduating in 1911. From 1912 to 1915 Roberts copied and edited manuscripts at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, on behalf of the Guild of Graduates; thereafter, from 1916 until his death in 1938, he served as principal at schools in Pentrellyncymer, Cyffylliog and Gellifor. In 1917 he gained a Master of Arts degree for his work on William Salesbury's 'Herbal' (Llysieulyfr Myddyginiaethol William Salesbury (Liverpool, 1916)). Roberts was known as a noted academic and palaeographer, as well as a talented poet.
