Research papers of Donald Gwyon Howells (d. 1997), former lecturer in Celtic Languages at Glasgow University, relating to the Celtic verb and syntax. Donated by his widow Mrs Catherine Howells. The papers comprise research papers and notes relating to the Celtic verb and syntax (see Donald G. Howells, 'The Gaelic of Carloway, Isle of Lewis: prepositions with verbal nouns' in James Carney & David Greene (eds), Celtic studies: essays in memory of Angus Matheson 1912-1962 (London, 1968), and D. Gwyon Howells, 'Absolute & conjunct again', Studia celtica, 22/23 (1987/88)); notes in the form of index cards relating to the origin of Welsh phrases and idioms (boxes 15-16); translation and grammatical points on 'Y Gododdin' (box 6) and comments on the syntax of 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy' (box 10); and photocopies of articles relating to syntax in other languages, in particular French and Indo-European (box 14).
