Portmeirion was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1976. The building of such a romantic village in a coastal setting had been a boyhood dream of his, and he showed interest in other such creations and renovations around the world until his death. Having searched for a suitable site for his creation he bought the estate, which was then called Aberia, from his uncle Sir Osmond Williams. The hotel at Portmeirion was opened in 1926 in order to help finance the project. In 1931 Williams-Ellis added to the estate by buying the nearby Deudraeth Castle, which, like many of the buildings in Portmeirion, he subsequently rented out. Most of the buildings and features at Portmeirion are buildings which, having been made redundant in their original setting, were moved to Portmeirion in order to conserve them. The estate is now a designated Conservation Area, and most of the buildings are Grade II listed.
