History

It has not been possible to determine whether these boards came under the authority of the Court or the Senate. The absence of references to the activities of Examination Boards in the records of those two authorities may partly be due to the confidential nature of deliberations relating to the examination of individual candidates. The Examination Boards, however, regularly sent lists of qualified candidates for approval to the Court as the governing body of the University.

The Examination Boards, consisting of both internal and external examiners, considered and approved the contents of examination papers; agreed the standards of marking for examinations; approved the subjects of dissertations; and recommended the granting of both higher degrees and initial degrees by examination by issuing class lists for approval by the Court.
