This collection comprises forty petitions submitted by various ratepayers and parishes to county magistrates, expressing both opposition to and support for the proposed erection of a joint "lunatic asylum". Included are printed agreements concerning the establishment of the asylum, along with correspondence regarding the proposed site. A letter from the Clerk of the Peace Office in Stafford is accompanied by a county's asylum map layout . The collection also contains several drafts of meeting minutes, letters, and attendance records related to the proposed joint asylum for the counties of Carmarthen, Cardigan, Glamorgan, and Pembroke. the collection also includes a draft agreement dated 17 June 1847, approved by committees, for the union of Carmarthen, Glamorgan, and Pembroke for the construction of the asylum, followed by a formal agreement dated 4 August 1847. Additionally is a that bundle that contains draft agreements for the sale and purchase of land in the parishes of Swansea and Llansamled, including a 1000-year lease of the Danygraig Fawr estate in Glamorgan. There are also Legal documents titled case for the opinion of Mr. E. R. Williams on the interpretation of clauses 8 and 9 of 9 Vic. c.126, and the response of William Llewellyn to a bill of complaint filed by John Austin on 22 March 1861.

The term " lunatic " has been used severally in this collection to refer to mental illness or people suffering from mental illness. The items in this collection use outdated terms which are offensive and can cause distress to some of our users and have only been used where they can not be avoided (direct quotation) .
The National library of Wales acknowledges that outdated terminologies and offensive terms exist within our collection. Some catalogue entries have been described in a language we would not use today which may be inappropriate, harmful, derogatory, abusive and offensive.

These documents and archival descriptions are records of the past and thus reflects and represents the attitudes, language and believes of those times in terms describing race, gender, class, sexual orientation, disability, and mental health.
