Augustus John funeral and memorial,

Papers, 1954-1975, of the Rev. R. M. Verity, Vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, relating mainly to the funeral of Augustus John in November 1961 and the unveiling of the memorial to him in Fordingbridge in 1967.
The papers include letters to Verity from the John family, comprising eight letters and a postcard from Dorelia John, 1955-1969, four letters from Admiral Sir Caspar John, 1961-1967, one letter from Romilly John, 1969, and three Christmas cards and a telegram from Augustus and Dorelia, 1956-1958. Also included are Augustus John's burial certificate, Verity's notes for the memorial service [?and funeral] and printed material including catalogues, 1954, 1975, newspaper cuttings, 1954-1970, invitations, printed orders of service and a copy of the volume The Drawings of Augustus John, introd. by Stephen Longstreet (Alhambra, Calif., 1967).

A Book of Private Prayer used as a scrapbook, 1927-1944, by the Rev. B. G. Rees, Curate of Defynock (1934-36), Llangynwyd, Maesteg (1936-38), and Laleston (1938-44), and Rector of Llansannor (1944-48); the volume consists mostly of press cuttings and letters relating to his ordination and career and his column in the Bridgend Advertiser, with some syllabuses for his lecture courses at the Maesteg Unemployed Centre with the WEA and YMCA (45 ff.). Also included are proofs, [?1938], of W. H. Auden's twenty-seven sonnet sequence 'In Time of War', for publication in W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood, Journey to a War (London, 1939), pp. 259-285; the proofs contain a very few manuscript emendations by the author and suggested titles for some of the sonnets and were given to Rees by Auden (see Auden's letter, NLW MS 24059E, f. 2) (6 ff.).

Also a variety of facts and experiments, and descriptions concerning the Hot-Water system, as applied to horticultural and other purposes; showing the causes and remedies in occasional failures, and the advantages of hot- water for producing a slow, safe, and continuous effect, while the warming by steam is sudden, hazardous, and intermittent.
