Scope and content

Rent ledgers of the Tredegar Wharf Company and its successors. The accounts of each individual tenant in Newport, St Woolloos and Pillgwenlli with the estate, detailing rents due, and how and when discharged. There are also credit and debit accounts for other individuals and companies, including for tonnages, wayleaves and wharves. The Newport Rents ledgers begin in 1907, as do the audit, cash and collection books, on the amalgamation of the Tredegar Wharf estate with the Newport holdings of the Monmouthshire estate. ANA 4/54 was re-used in pencil, apparently adding the Monmouthshire estate's Newport tenants to the Tredegar Wharf estate's tenants on the creation of the Newport Rents Department in 1906.

System of arrangement

Most of the ledgers are members of blocks of books in use at the same time, namely ANA 4/1-2 (1813-1844), 4/3-5 (1859-1881), 4/6-12 (1882-1895), 4/13-18 (1895-1906), 4/21-48 (1907-1925), 4/55-56 (1909) and 4/57-58 (1921-1922). These blocks are arranged chronologically, and the volumes within each block arranged in their original order. -- ANA 4/6-9 contain ground rent accounts, ANA 4/10 contains freehold rent accounts, and ANA 4/11-12 are indexes to the other five volumes. The forward and back references to ANA 4/6 and 4/7 are to volumes '2' and '1' respectively, that is, the other way around from the numbers stamped on their spines. -- In the case of ANA 4/13-18, 4/13-16 are foliated as if they are one continuous volume, ff. 1-2400, and contain ground rent accounts, with the streets presented in roughly alphabetical order, ANA 4/17 contains the freehold rents, and ANA 4/18 the index to the other five volumes. -- With ANA 4/21-45, the volumes were originally distinguished by a letter, as was the practice of the Monmouthshire estate, and the streets are presented in alphabetical order. New streets created by the growth of Newport were included in ANA 4/43-44. The forward references from this block of volumes is to a single folio number which reaches in excess of 4000, suggesting a block of volumes (not found) arranged similarly to ANA 4/13-16. The forward references from ANA 4/45-46 are to a 'New Ledger Mis.' (also not found). These volumes may have been passed to the Eagle Star Insurance Company on the sale the estate in 1956. -- Other ledgers (including allotment, cottage and weekly rents, and arrears) are arranged chronologically.
