Papers of Colonel David Williams (1752-1819) of Henllys, parish of Cilycwm, co. Carmarthen, who gave evidence at the trial of Warren Hastings. The records of his service in India for over eighteen years until his retirement in 1785 include his commission to be a lieutenant of infantry, 1773, signed by Warren Hastings; three letter books, 1781-1786, mainly of correspondence in the former year, particularly with Lieutenant Colonel Alex[ande]r Hannay; three tickets issued to David Williams for the trial of Warren Hastings; and nine letters, 1781-1805, mainly from fellow-officers. Among papers, 1798-1802, relating to Williams's service in command of the Royal Carmarthen Fusiliers is a notebook containing copies of correspondence concerning his resignation. Also included are letters, 1798-1815, some from [Sir] W[illia]m Paxton; satires, including one recording the 'Historical & Political Exploits of a D-rb-sh-re Squire' who canvassed Carmarthen in [17]66; a deed, 1784, relating to property in the parish of Llanfairarybryn; and correspondence, accounts, etc., 1826-1844, of William Jones of Henllys, who was Williams's nephew.

The collection consists of manuscript, typescript and draft material by Cynan. Amongst the poetry there are odes, long poems in free metre and in metre, hymns, carols and translations of poems. Included is a first draft of Anfon y Nico i Landwr and a copy of Cofnodion a Chyfansoddiadau Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1924 Pontypwl with Cynan's amendments to his ode I'r Dduw nid Adweinir. The plays and dramatic productions include his pageants Hywel Harris and Absalom fy Mab. Amongst the essays is a typescript of his only novel Ffarwel Weledig, described as a romance of Macedonia. Other material includes, lectures, addresses and essays on various subjects, mostly relating to drama and Welsh literature; prayers and sermons; newspaper cuttings; correspondence; radio talks; photographs; L.P. recordings of Cynan reading his poetry. There is documentation regarding the National Eisteddfod and relating to Cynan's connection with the Free Masons.

Three holograph letters from [Richard Jones Owen] ('Glaslyn'; 1831-1909), Penrhyndeudraeth, to his grand-daughter Elizabeth] Glaslyn Owen, Llanrwst, 1903-1907 (the teaching of Welsh in Secondary Schools, the recipient's studies, the recipient's marriage, personal); and manuscripts of John Owen ('Ap Glaslyn'; 1857-1934), including a holograph poem, 'Rhiangerdd Gwen o' r Ddol', which was awarded the prize at an eisteddfod at Llandudno, 1887, a scrap-book, 1882-1896 and undated, relating to eisteddfodau and literary and musical festivals, a certificate in elocution, 1885, and a certificate of ordination as Calvinistic Methodist minister, 1919.

The original manuscript of an article entitled 'Philistiaeth yng Nghymru' (emended from 'Philistiaeth Lenyddol Cymru') by the Reverend William Richard Jones ('Goleufryn'), published in Y Geninen, 1885, pp. 275-83, under the pseudonym of 'Siluriad', together with the manuscripts of a lengthy footnote by the editor, John Thomas ('Eifionydd'), and five holograph letters, 1890, from 'Eifionydd' to 'Goleufryn' relating thereto; a holograph letter, 1887, from the Reverend J. C. Jones, Mankato, Minnesota, U.S.A., to W. R. Jones ('Goleufryn') (a preaching engagement); a holograph letter, 1904, from [O. G. Owen] ('Alafon'), Cwmyglo, to Mrs. Jones, wife of 'Goleufryn', relating to a contribution to the writer's edition of Gweithiau Llenyddol Goleufryn (Caernarfon, 1904); and a holograph poem ('Cywydd: 'Tylodi'') by 'Alafon'.

Papers of Myfanwy Lloyd Lumley (?1875-1968), Bangor, consisting of material relating to members of her family. Included are a diary of Sarah Lumley (Myfanwy's mother), February 1893- March 1894, and a postcard from her, July 1900, to Miss Williams, North Farm, Bangor; three testimonial letters to Elisabeth Meirion Lumley (1870-1930, Myfanwy's sister) when applying for nursing posts; a letter, 1894, from Meirion to her father; four letters, 1929-1930 (three being incomplete), from her to her sister Myfanwy, together with her diary while nursing at Hopital Militaire Anglais, Nevers, France, January-October 1916; a letter 8 November 1952, to Myfanwy Lumley from Paul Dukes (from South Africa) to whom she had been 'nanny'; MS. notes of two Welsh sermons [? of Reverend Roderick Lumley, ? 1840-1900, Myfanwy Lumley's father, Congregational minister of Bwlchyffridd, and later at Trefor, Caernarfon]; and a copy of the address of the chairman of the Union of English Congregational Churches at Caernarfon, 1885. The collection contains letters written to R. Peris Williams from various individuals; addresses and notebooks on religious matters such as the attempt to lift the debt owed by Henryd Chapel, Conwy, Caernarfonshire. Also, a few Eisteddfod adjudications, 1867-1878 and his own poetical works, 1849-1855 as well as two diaries written by him whilst serving as Chaplain in the First World War, 1915-1917 and details on the death of Hedd Wyn in 1917. -- There is a large section of papers belonging and relating to Gwalchmai. Papers regarding his career as a minister and preacher collated most probably by R. Peris Williams for his memoir on Gwalchmai. Also, a large part of the collection is taken up by letters written to Gwalchmai from various correspondents, family and friends, poets and writers. They provide an insight into the life and interests of the literary men of the Victorian age in Wales and reveal a great deal about religious matters. -- Other material, include, collections of hymns; sermons preached by Emrys, 1854-1856; sailing book, 1884-1885 of the Enterprise, captained by George Lewis; diary of Ceiriog as a station master in 1872; autobiography of Rev. Samuel Evans, Llandegla, Denbighshire, 1900 and essays on philology given to Gwallter Mechain by Dr Karl Meyer of Germany, 1844.
