A treatise, letters, and poetry

  • NLW MS 597D

  • 17 cent.

A lengthy doctrinal treatise entitled Give unto Ceasar the thinges of Ceasar, written not earlier than 1644, but probably before 1649, in defence of the divine right of kings; drafts and copies of letters by Edward Herbert and H. Emerson; and a few poems. As the volume was at one time in the Powis Castle collection it is possible that the author of the treatise was a member of the Herbert family, possibly Edward, 3rd baron Herbert of Cherbury, grandson of Edward, 1st baron Herbert of Cherbury, the metaphysician, and that the poems may be attributed to one of the Herberts.

  • [1850]-1855

A volume, [1850]-1855 (watermarks 1849, 1850), containing pen, ink and wash drawings of ancient buildings and archaeological remains in Anglesey with accompanying text. The volume appears to be the work of Helen Spode (née Heywood), and also her husband, Josiah Spode of Hawkesyard Hall, Staffordshire, and of Plas Gwyn and Beaumaris.
The layout consists typically of a page of text in black and red ink and an illuminated initial in Celtic style, with a drawing on the facing page (thirty-five in total); additional drawings often form vignettes in the text. A few of the drawings are initialled 'H.S.' (ff. 12, 31 verso, 39, 41) and 'J.S.' (ff. 10, 33). Subjects include various cromlechs, churches and castles; the majority are in the east of the island, including Beaumaris (ff. 1 verso-13) and Penmon Priory (ff. 14 verso-26). The volume also includes a single parchment leaf (f. 67) containing a copy of the illumination on f. 8 verso of the Bangor Pontifical (now in Bangor University, Welsh Library, Special Collections, Cathedral Collection).

John Price of Gogerddan pedigree

  • NLW MS 23963G.
  • Ffeil
  • 1598

Pedigree and achievement, 1598, of John Price [or Pryse] of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire, with fifteen coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted, compiled by Thomas Jones of Fountain Gate, Tregaron, Cardiganshire.
The pedigree consists of the achievement of arms in the centre and the arms of Price's male ancestors arranged around the border, and is an example of 'Style 5' in Michael Powell Siddons, Welsh Pedigree Rolls (Aberystwyth, 1996), p. 12. The pedigree is traced from the tenth-century 'Klothian ap Gwydhere' [Cloddien ap Gwrydr Hir] and his wife Morfudd, daughter of Owain ap Tythwalch. Although ascribed to Jones, the pedigree was written by one of a number of scribes employed by him (see Michael Powell Siddons, 'Welsh Pedigree Rolls - Additions and Corrections', National Library of Wales Journal, 32 (2001-2), 433-42 (pp. 433-4), and Daniel Huws, 'Twm Siôn Cati', Carmarthenshire Antiquary, 45 (2009), 39-45 (pp. 40-41, 45)).
