Scope and content

The company was launched in 1858 as the Manchester, Liverpool, Swansea and Milford Haven Junction Railway but was renamed the Mid-Wales Railway in 1859 after their proposed Llanidloes to Newbridge-on-Wye to Llandovery line was cut down to Llanidloes to Newbridge by a House of Commons committee in the face of the Central Wales Railway's proposed Knighton to Llandrindod to Llandovery line, which was itself cut down to Knighton to Llandrindod. Both the proposed lines were to have run parallel from Builth to Llandovery.
