Mather-Jackson, Henry, Sir 1855-1942

The Lewis family resided in Monmouthshire and held a prominent position, such as high sheriffs of the county. John Lewis, sheriff in 1757, married Mary Powell (d. 1760), the only daughter of William Powell (d.1723) from his second marriage, who was the heir to a small leasehold estate at Llantilio. Mary's great-grandfather was Walter Powell, a local attorney and steward to the Earl of Worcester and the other landowners, and owner of the Penrhos estate which was inherited by his eldest surviving son. Mary caused a scandal by having an affair with James Parry, an organist, who later wrote a book in his self-defence. She married John Lewis of Llwyn Ffortun who was her lawyer in the suit against Parry. Lewis built the Llantilio Court in 1775. Richard (1749-1836), heir to the estate, married Frances Elizabeth Brigstock (d.1823) of Blaenpant, Cardiganshire in 1772. They had two daughters. The eldest, Mary Anne (d. 1804) married John Barnard Bosanquet in 1804, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, 1830. He was the third son to Samuel Bosanquet of Forest House, Essex and Dingestow, Monmouthshire. The youngest daughter, Frances Elizabeth, (1783-1846) married William Taddy (d. 1845), eldest son of Christopher Taddy of Croydon, in 1815. She lived on the estate until her death. In 1847 Colonel Henry Morgan-Clifford, her first-cousin once removed, inherited the estate. He was the MP for Hereford, 1846-1865. He sold Llantilio in 1873 to Sir Samuel Jackson, Baronet of Birkenhead, grandfather of Sir Henry Mather Jackson, 3rd Bt (1855-1942).
