The Machynlleth Poor Law Union was established in 1839 following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, and consisted of the parishes of Caereinion Fechan, Cemais, Darowen, Isygarreg, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Uwchygarreg (Montgomeryshire), Pennal and Tywyn (Merionethshire).
