Rhennir y traethawd yn un bennod ar ddeg (ff. 2-65) a cheir ynddi gyfeiriadau at ffigurau nodedig, gan gynnwys athronwyr o'r oes Glasurol hyd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg; mae yna restr cynnwys ar f. 1. Gwyddys i dri ymgeisydd roi cynnig ar y gystadleuaeth ac i John Jones, Meirion House, Tanygrisiau, ennill y wobr (gw. Y Dydd, 4 Ionawr 1884, t. 7), ond methwyd darganfod ai ef oedd 'Myfyr'. = The essay consists of eleven chapters (ff. 2-65) and contains references to notable figures including philosophers from the Classical period to the nineteenth century; a list of contents is on f. 1. It is known that three entrants attempted the essay and that the prize was won by John Jones, Meirion House, Tanygrisiau (see Y Dydd, 4 January 1884, p. 7), but it has not been possible to ascertain if he was 'Myfyr'.

Thomas, February-March 1933 (ff. 21-22, 27-42), and May McKisack, 19 July 1933 (f. 43); included among the letters are notes in Welsh, by the Rev. John Owen, on the Anglesey ancestry of Thomas and Jones (ff. 7-11), with an English translation (ff. 24-26), and a typescript draft of C. L. R. Thomas's memoir of his uncle Hugh Owen Thomas (ff. 28-40).

Signatories include members of the Royal Family (ff. 1-3 verso) and the Festival of Wales organising committee (ff. 7-8 verso); competitors at (ff. 34-48) and visitors to (ff. 72 verso-79 verso) the VIth British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, July 1958; and visitors to the Royal Welsh Show at Bangor, 23-25 July 1958 (ff. 49-50), the Ebbw Vale National Eisteddfod (ff. 50 verso-51), and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod (ff. 57-72).

A holograph letter, 8 July 1751, from the painter Richard Wilson, Venice, to [Admiral] Thomas Smith, London, touching on Wilson's studies of Titian, Francesco Zuccarelli, his portrait of the German ambassador, and various acquaintances in Venice (ff. 3-4). Also included is a letter, 7 November 1750, from the painter's sister E[lizabeth] Wilson, Bristol, to Smith, apparently on behalf of her brother, concerning a dispute with a Mr Harris arising from 'the pictures of the two Miss Jenkins' (ff. 1-2).
Both letters were first published in Maud M. Wyndham, Chronicles of the Eighteenth Century: Founded on the Correspondence of Sir Thomas Lyttelton and his Family, 2 vols (London, 1924), II, 66-69; they have subsequently seen print in Adrian Bury, Richard Wilson, R.A.: The Grand Classic (Leigh-on-Sea, 1947), pp. 17-18, W. G. Constable, Richard Wilson (London, 1953), pp. 19-22, and elsewhere. This is one of only three holograph Richard Wilson letters known to exist (see Constable, pp. 1, 13).

The volume records a voyage from Liverpool to the Benin River, [Nigeria], September-November 1834 (ff. 3-21), and the return voyage, from Corisco, [Equatorial Guinea], to Liverpool, March-June 1835 (ff. 21 verso-47).
A letter, 22 October 1835, from John Mather, Bonny River, [Nigeria], to Edward Jones on board the barque 'Mansfield' at New Calabar, [Nigeria], and a receipt, 1832, are enclosed in an archival envelope (3 ff.).

Also included is the appointment of Griffiths and others as Overseers of the Poor for Dolgellau, 7 April 1846 (f. 4).

With the exception of 'To Kitty Walker' (f. 62), all the works appear, with mostly minor variations, in The Works of the Right Honourable Sir Chas. Hanbury Williams..., 3 vols (London, 1822). The contents list (f. i recto-verso) includes titles of additional poems, after f. 119, which were subsequently cut from the volume.

Original manuscript draft, [?1911], of D. J. Saer, The Story of Cardiganshire (Cardiff, [1911]), a volume for schoolchildren, describing the geography and history of the county, published as part of the Welsh County Series.
The manuscript consists of the main text (ff. 1-140) with many annotations and corrections (including new sections pasted in on ff. 2, 3, 27), a list of notable Cardiganshire men (ff. 141-150), glossary (ff. 151-152), bibliography (f. 153) and contents (ff. 154-155). Draft versions of maps and diagrams are on ff. 2, 156-165; several photographs, including some reproduced in the printed version, are pasted in on ff. 14, 18, 24, 25, 28, 33, 35, 83, 87, 89, 90. The preface, list of maps and pictures and index are not included.

Letter book of H.M.S.S. Geyser

Letter book, 1846-1850, of H[er] M[ajesty's] S[team] S[loop] 'Geyser' containing copies of letters, Nov. 1846-May 1850 (ff. 1 verso-131), and memoranda, June-Dec. 1847 (ff. 179-180), sent by her commander, F[rancis] T[homas] Brown, mainly to his superiors.
The 'Geyser' was employed in famine relief in Western Ireland, Jan.-Apr. 1847 (ff. 6-34), and at the port of Setubal and elsewhere in Portugal during the Patuleia Revolt, June-July 1847 (ff. 43-52). She was subsequently stationed in the Cape Colony (South Africa) and Mauritius, Nov. 1847-May 1850 (ff. 63-131), and was sent on diplomatic missions, meeting with local chiefs and rulers in Madagascar and the Comoros Islands (ff. 81-102). The letters range from brief memoranda to lengthy reports and letters of proceedings; they include references to routine ship business and disciplinary matters, intelligence reports and accounts of diplomacy and treaty negotiations. Two additional copy letters have been pasted into the volume (ff. 119a, 122a).

The volume records voyages from London to Surinam, July-October 1804 (ff. 1-15 verso), and Surinam to London (via Cork), January-April 1805 (ff. 17 verso-34); from London to Jamaica (via Cowes, Madeira and Barbados; carrying 250 soldiers and their families), August-November 1805 (ff. 35 verso-55), and from Jamaica to London, February-May 1806 (ff. 56 verso-77). A note on f. 89 verso records an encounter on 28 April 1806 with HM Brig Raven (see also f. 72 verso). The volume is written in a hand resembling that of NLW MS 15463D.

Autobiographical Diary of Thomas Jones, Pencerrig

A typed transcript, 1948, of the memoirs and journal of Thomas Jones, Pencerrig, recounting his life in London, France and especially Italy during the second half of the eighteenth century. It was copied from another typescript (then owned by C. L. Evan-Thomas) of the original manuscript (now NLW MS 23812D).
The volume broadly covers the period from the 1760s to December 1783, with a final entry by Jones at Pencerrig, November 1798 (ff. 303-304). The main text is typed on the rectos only, with Jones' original notes reproduced on the facing versos. Facsimile copies of a sketch of Mt Vesuvius and a plan of Jones’ lodgings in Naples in 1780, apparently redrafted by the creator of the initial typescript, have been inserted after ff. 168 and 201.

Traethawd ar D. Lleufer Thomas,

An essay in Welsh, c. 1952-1953, on the life and work of Sir Daniel Lleufer Thomas (1863-1940), presumably written by David ('Dewi') Goronwy Griffiths (1882-1958), journalist and Cardiganshire county librarian until 1948. 'Hanes Bywyd a Gwaith Syr Daniel Lleufer Thomas' was a proposed essay competition at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Ystradgynlais, 1954, and was amongst the list of subjects published in 1952 and 1953, but excluded from the Ystradgynlais list. Also included is a typescript copy (ff. 42-60) which corresponds to ff. 1-26 in the manuscript version, and a typescript copy letter, 1953, addressed to Ernest Roberts, Bangor, probably from D. Gethin Williams, solicitor, Swansea, nephew of D. Lleufer Thomas and patron of the intended competition, enquiring as to the fate of the competition. For papers of D.
