Correspondence and papers, 1964-1993, accumulated by J. E. Caerwyn Williams, mainly as editor of Y Traethodydd and Ysgrifau Beirniadol. Correspondents include John Gwilym Jones (2) 1976-1978, Saunders Lewis (7) 1967-1979, Thomas Parry (3) 1976-1978, and Kate Roberts (15) 1964-1978. Also included are manuscript and typescript drafts of contributions published in Y Traethodydd, including a short story, Pryder Morwyn, by Kate Roberts (ff. 47-54).

Speculum Juratoris (ff. 1-129), a theological treatise in six parts on swearing, by Thomas de Wygenhale, canon of the Praemonstratensian abbey of West Dereham and vicar of Holy Trinity, Cambridge, fl. 1384-1406. The first quire is wanting. The treatise is also known from BL Harleian MS 148. On ff. 129-130v is a treatise on blasphemy, also attributed to Thomas de Wygenhale, which does not occur in the Harleian MS. All copied by one hand.

The second part of a photostat facsimile, bound for convenience in two volumes (see also NLW MS 6495C), of Christ Church (Oxford) MS 184, a manuscript written in various hands of the 16th and 17th centuries. The original portion was written by Wiliam Cynwal (d. 1587/8), herald bard, who also inserted a note explaining how the manuscript came to be written. The major part of the volumes, written in Welsh, consist of cywyddau, awdlau and englynion, many of them in the autograph of the authors, and most of them written to various members of the Salusbury family of Lleweni and to Katherine of Berain (1534/5-1591). The English portion of the manuscripts includes autograph poems by Sir John Salusbury (1567-1612) and Robert Chester (fl. c. 1586-1604), and others. Also included in the manuscripts are the coats of arms of Katherine of Berain, resulting from her four marriages; a few Latin items, including elegies and epitaphs to Katherine of Berain; a rough index to the contents of the volumes compiled by John Jones (Tegid) (1792-1852), Christ Church (Oxford), in the 19th century.

Typewritten copies of a letter, 25 September 1897, from Abby Johnson Woodman, Oak Knoll, Danvers, Massachusetts, U.S.A., to Frederick J. Gibbins, Neath, Glamorgan, relating to the connection between John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), American poet, and John ap John (1625?-1697), Ruabon, founder of the Society of Friends in Wales and promoter of emigration from Wales to Pennsylvania; typewritten copy of a letter from Whittier, 29 January 1879, to another Friend.

Material relating to Hugh Hughes (1790-1863), artist, including letters, 1886-1894, to Thomas Henry Thomas (Arlunydd Penygarn) (1839-1915) from J. Deffett Francis (1815-1901), Swansea, Rees Jenkin Jones (1835-1924), Aberdare, J. Pearson, London, and William Williams (Ap Caledfryn) (1837-1915), together with a copy of Yr Ymofynydd for March 1890 containing an article on Hugh Hughes by Rees Jenkin Jones.

Journal of a tour, July-November 1819, by a Mr and Mrs Woolrych, commencing in Redhill, [?Surrey], and proceeding into Wales where they visited parts of Denbighshire, Merioneth, Caernarvonshire, Anglesey, Cardiganshire, Radnorshire and (briefly) Monmouthshire.
Included in the itinerary were Worcester and Great Malvern (pp. 2-23), Shrewsbury (pp. 25-43), Snowdonia (pp. 47-112 passim), Bangor (pp. 50-53, 57-60), Anglesey (pp. 64-72, 79), Caernarfon (pp. 82-89), Dolgellau (pp. 120-151), Barmouth (pp. 151-160), Aberystwyth (pp. 165-174), and Hereford (pp. 178-187). The writers of the journal are possibly Humphry William and Penelope Woolrych of Hertfordshire.

Typescript transcripts, 1950, 1955, by C. V. Appleton, of a manuscript history and registers of Bethany Baptist Church, St Mary Street, Cardiff.
The typescripts include a transcript, 1955, of a register of church members, 1806-1864 (ff. 6-37), with indexes of surnames and places (ff. 38-51); an incomplete transcript, 1950, of the original register of births, 1804-1837, and deaths, 1807-1814 (ff. 55-62), with an index of names (ff. 63-64); and a transcript, 1955, of part of an early history of the Church, probably written by Thomas Hopkins, a founding member of the Church (ff. 2-4). A covering letter from the donor, 22 July 1955, is included (f. i).

Notebook, [1905x1930], of M. H. Jones, Penllwyn, Aberystwyth, containing lists of place-names in Carmarthenshire, arranged by letter and accompanied by etymological and philological notes, as well as detailed notes relating to older forms of names.
Notes found loose inside the volume have been placed in an archival envelope (ff. 144-145).

Papers, [?1918]-[?1939], collected by Sir Alfred T. Davies, concerning the orthopaedic surgeons Hugh Owen Thomas and Sir Robert Jones. They include some seventeen letters to Davies, [1920s]-1933 (ff. 1-43, 100), along with printed items, press cuttings and miscellaneous notes relating mainly to Hugh Owen Thomas, [?1918]-[?1939] (ff. 44-72), and mainly to Sir Robert Jones, 1933-1937 (ff. 73-104).
The correspondents include Sir Robert Jones, [1920s]-1932 (ff. 1-4), C. L. R. Thomas, February-March 1933 (ff. 21-22, 27-42), and May McKisack, 19 July 1933 (f. 43); included among the letters are notes in Welsh, by the Rev. John Owen, on the Anglesey ancestry of Thomas and Jones (ff. 7-11), with an English translation (ff. 24-26), and a typescript draft of C. L. R. Thomas's memoir of his uncle Hugh Owen Thomas (ff. 28-40).

The 'Golden Book of Welcome' or 'Llyfr Aur Croeso', containing signatures of visitors to Wales during the Festival of Wales in 1958.
Signatories include members of the Royal Family (ff. 1-3 verso) and the Festival of Wales organising committee (ff. 7-8 verso); competitors at (ff. 34-48) and visitors to (ff. 72 verso-79 verso) the VIth British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, July 1958; and visitors to the Royal Welsh Show at Bangor, 23-25 July 1958 (ff. 49-50), the Ebbw Vale National Eisteddfod (ff. 50 verso-51), and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod (ff. 57-72).

A holograph letter, 8 July 1751, from the painter Richard Wilson, Venice, to [Admiral] Thomas Smith, London, touching on Wilson's studies of Titian, Francesco Zuccarelli, his portrait of the German ambassador, and various acquaintances in Venice (ff. 3-4). Also included is a letter, 7 November 1750, from the painter's sister E[lizabeth] Wilson, Bristol, to Smith, apparently on behalf of her brother, concerning a dispute with a Mr Harris arising from 'the pictures of the two Miss Jenkins' (ff. 1-2).
Both letters were first published in Maud M. Wyndham, Chronicles of the Eighteenth Century: Founded on the Correspondence of Sir Thomas Lyttelton and his Family, 2 vols (London, 1924), II, 66-69; they have subsequently seen print in Adrian Bury, Richard Wilson, R.A.: The Grand Classic (Leigh-on-Sea, 1947), pp. 17-18, W. G. Constable, Richard Wilson (London, 1953), pp. 19-22, and elsewhere. This is one of only three holograph Richard Wilson letters known to exist (see Constable, pp. 1, 13).

Journal, 1834-1835 (watermark 1833), of the barque 'Amelia Matilda' of Liverpool, commanded by R. F. Jones, the journal kept by E[dward] F. Jones. The volume records a voyage from Liverpool to the Benin River, [Nigeria], September-November 1834 (ff. 3-21), and the return voyage, from Corisco, [Equatorial Guinea], to Liverpool, March-June 1835 (ff. 21 verso-47).
A letter, 22 October 1835, from John Mather, Bonny River, [Nigeria], to Edward Jones on board the barque 'Mansfield' at New Calabar, [Nigeria], and a receipt, 1832, are enclosed in an archival envelope (3 ff.).

Account book, 1849-1852, 1864-1875, of the Rev. Joseph Morris, a Congregational minister in Nefyn and elsewhere in Lleyn, Caernarvonshire, also employed by the Madryn estate as a joiner.
The volume records general accounts, January 1849-January 1850 (ff. 2 verso-10); payments received at Nefyn, February 1851-June 1852 (ff. 10 verso-11 verso, 14); and payments for preaching and other work, January 1851-August 1852, January 1864-January 1875 (ff. 12-13 verso, 14 verso-38, 39, 40 verso).

Certificate, 1816, and instructions, 1816, 1846, relating to the pension of Evan Griffiths, Dolgellau, Merionethshire, wounded at the Battle of Waterloo whilst serving with the Coldstream Guards and now an out-pensioner of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea (ff. 1-3). Also included is the appointment of Griffiths and others as Overseers of the Poor for Dolgellau, 7 April 1846 (f. 4).

Original manuscript draft, [?1911], of D. J. Saer, The Story of Cardiganshire (Cardiff, [1911]), a volume for schoolchildren, describing the geography and history of the county, published as part of the Welsh County Series.
The manuscript consists of the main text (ff. 1-140) with many annotations and corrections (including new sections pasted in on ff. 2, 3, 27), a list of notable Cardiganshire men (ff. 141-150), glossary (ff. 151-152), bibliography (f. 153) and contents (ff. 154-155). Draft versions of maps and diagrams are on ff. 2, 156-165; several photographs, including some reproduced in the printed version, are pasted in on ff. 14, 18, 24, 25, 28, 33, 35, 83, 87, 89, 90. The preface, list of maps and pictures and index are not included.

Typescript calendar, [1943], of correspondence, 1623-1641, of John Williams, Bishop of Lincoln, held by Lincoln Diocesan Record Office, now part of Lincolnshire Archives (ff. 1-4).
The calendar summarises the contents of twenty-three letters to Williams, 1623-1641, and five copy and draft letters by him, 1623-1631.

Two loose gatherings from a printed account book containing accounts, 1896-1897, 1899-1903, of the Aberystwyth based University College of Wales Auxiliary Branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
The volume lists the individual subscribers, including teaching staff and students, and their contributions.

Log book, 1804-1806 (watermarks 1801, 1802), of the sailing ship 'Liberty'.
The volume records voyages from London to Surinam, July-October 1804 (ff. 1-15 verso), and Surinam to London (via Cork), January-April 1805 (ff. 17 verso-34); from London to Jamaica (via Cowes, Madeira and Barbados; carrying 250 soldiers and their families), August-November 1805 (ff. 35 verso-55), and from Jamaica to London, February-May 1806 (ff. 56 verso-77). A note on f. 89 verso records an encounter on 28 April 1806 with HM Brig Raven (see also f. 72 verso). The volume is written in a hand resembling that of NLW MS 15463D.
