The collection consists of four groups, namely: a collection of manuscripts, [late 16 cent.]-[18 cent.], containing transcripts of Welsh poems and prose items being largely volumes of Glamorgan origin acquired by Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg) and forming part of his library (NLW MSS 13061-86); miscellaneous notebooks, papers, etc., of Iolo Morganwg, bound into eighty volumes (NLW MSS 13087-162); miscellaneous papers and correspondence of Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni ('The Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society'), 1836-1848 (NLW MSS 13182-5E); and miscellaneous other manuscripts (NLW MSS 13163-81). The second group (NLW MSS 13087-162) contains a mass of notes on matters of Welsh literary, historical, and antiquarian interest, transcripts of historical documents, transcripts of Welsh poems, series of triads, and prose compositions, and copies of original poems, essays, and reports by Iolo himself, etc. Amongst the historical and antiquarian material are items which Welsh scholars do not accept as authentic but which they regard as being spurious and the fruit of Iolo Morganwg's inventive mind. The literary material too has its quota of items regarded as forgeries, including Welsh poems written by Iolo Morganwg in imitation of the style of earlier poets and attributed by him to such poets. The accounts given of the contents of the manuscripts which belong to this second group are intended to be descriptive and not analytical and, except in the case of major 'forgeries' such as the chronicle 'Brut Aberpergwm' and the poems attributed to Dafydd ap Gwilym, and a few other items such as letters attributed to the Rev. Edward Gamage, no attempt is made to include comments on the authenticity or spuriousness of the items noted. Many of the Welsh items contained in the volumes belonging to the second group were published with English translations and notes in Iolo Manuscripts: A Selection of Ancient Welsh Manuscripts in Prose and Verse from the Collection made by the late Edward Williams, ed. by Taliesin Williams (Llandovery, 1848) and Barddas; or, a Collection of Original Documents illustrative of the Theology, Wisdom, and Usages of the Bardo-Druidic System of the Isle of Britain, ed. by John Williams (Ab Ithel), 2 vols (Llandovery and London, 1862-1874).

Deeds, rentals, estate receiver's accounts, surveys, valuations, correspondence, maps and plans of the Ashburnham estate in Breconshire, Carmarthenshire and Glamorganshire, 1392-1968 (predominantly 1600-1925); sale catalogues and related papers, 1900-1923, deeds of the Mellington Hall estate in the parishes of Churchstoke and Mainstone in Montgomeryshire and Shropshire, 1753-1937, mortgaged by Samuel Rankin Heap to the trustees of the Ashburnham estate in 1923; manorial records and related papers of the manors of Cantref Selyf, 1650-1810, Talgarth, 1650-1826, Bronllys, 1661-1757, and Crickadarn, 1743-1809, all in Breconshire, and especially of the manor of Pembrey in Carmarthenshire, 1663-1922 (including papers relating to rights of shipwreck); accounts of collieries in Pembrey, 1714-1852 (mainly 1795 onwards), and papers relating to Pembrey tithes, colliery, port and harbour, and foreshore rights and wrecks, mainly 18-early 20 cent.

Manuscripts once held in the library of Plas Llanstephan, Carmarthenshire. The collection comprises mainly transcripts from medieval Welsh manuscripts such as the Red Book of Hergest, the Black Book of Carmarthen and the Red Book of Talgarth which include poetry, triads, pedigrees, arms, lives of saints, Brut y Brenhinedd, Brut y Tywysogion, the Laws of Hywel Dda, etc.; grammars and vocabularies; translations, mainly from Latin and English sources; proverbs; theological tracts; medical recipes; etc. The earliest of the manuscripts date from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. Most of the manuscripts are in the hands of Moses and Samuel Williams, with other scribes including Dr John Davies, Mallwyd, Dr John David Rhys, William Maurice, 'Iaco ab Dewi', Edward Lhuyd and William Owen-Pughe.

Deeds realting to Bryntalch, otherwise Cefnbryntalch estate, Montgomeryshire, 1535-[1910]; correspondence, 1758-[?1876], apparently unrelated to the estate; and miscellaneous papers, including weekly returns and correspondence relating to French and Dutch prisoners of war held in Newtown, Montgomeryshire, 1812-1814.

The fonds consists of three groups of papers of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW), formerly the Council for the Preservation of Rural Wales, and the Council for the Protection of Rural Wales, the first dated 1928-1961, deposited in 1966, the second (papers of the Caernarfonshire branch) dated 1976-1986, deposited in 1986, both of which had been described in a separate, earlier schedule. Both the 1966 group (Records and Classified files), and the third group (starting with General meeting minutes), deposited in 2002, are described here below. The 2002 deposit comprises General Meeting minutes, 1935-1971, Executive Committee minutes, 1935-1989, Finance and General Purposes Committee minutes, 1973-1989, Meetings of Trustees minutes, 1979-1989, and a committee attendance book, 1973-1989.

Records of the Welsh Town-Planning and Housing Trust Limited, established in 1913, including minute books, deeds, correspondence, financial papers and printed material relating to housing estates in Barry, Burry Port, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Newtown, Rhiwbina, Weston Rhyn and Wrexham, and other associated papers.

Estate and family papers of Owen and Wynne families of Peniarth, Merionethshire, [15 cent.]-[19 cent.], including groups relating to Mostyn of Nant and Mostyn and Williams of Penbedw, Flintshire, to Maurice of Lloran, Denbighshire, and to Corbet of Ynysmaengwyn, Merionethshire, including estate papers, 1630-1870, rentals and accounts; deeds, 1361/2-1963, mainly for Peniarth, Aberllefenni, Penbedw, Drenewydd and Mallwyd estates; legal papers, 1539-1848; industrial papers, 1615-1852; county administration, 1468-1874; and non-family trust papers, 1468-1878, mainly relating to the Ynysymaengwyn estate.

The main records of the court are: (1) civil side: plea rolls which is the formal record of civil actions, mainly debt, but from around 1700 only those actions which reached issue - an extremely small proportion in fact; docket rolls and books which serve as indexes to the plea rolls; prothonotary files which include draft pleadings, including those which did not reach issue, challenge pedigrees, insolvent debtors' papers and slander and libel papers where a defendant had moved for a writ a prohibition to halt the action being heard in the consistory court; feet of fines and common recoveries which are indexed in docket books of fines and recoveries and, for the Brecon circuit only, in the docket books of pleas and fines; and order books, which is a formal records of the court's orders in both civil and criminal cases; (2) Crown side: gaol files which include indictments, depositions of witnesses, recognizances, calendars of prisoners and coroner's inquests; indexes to criminal prosecutions for Flintshire (called Crown books, 1564-1666) and the Brecon circuit (called the Black Books, 1726-1830) though the order books already referred to contain formal records of orders to carry out sentences or to discharge prisoners; calendars rolls of indictments for Radnorshire, 1554-1659, Glamorgan, 1554-1603, Cardiganshire, 1541-1602, and Pembrokeshire, 1541-1622, 1674; and mainprize rolls (only six have survived) which list names of individuals bound over from one sessions until the next for an indefinite period; (3) equity side: pleadings of complainant and defendants together with interrogatories or set questions submitted to witnesses together with their replies; reports of the registrar of the court, decree books and bill books, the latter serving as indexes to the pleadings.

Papers and correspondence, 1880-1972, of or relating to the artist Gwen John and including letters and diaries, exercise books and other notebooks, and sketches; together with correspondence and other papers relating to the estate of Gwen John, and photographs found amongst her papers after her death.

Papers donated in 1933 by J. C. Owen, 1859-1921, dealing with tithes, rates, rent-charges, other parish accounts and miscellaneous ecclesiastical matters in various parishes in Cardiganshire and Brecknockshire with which the donor was connected. A second donation made in 1936 (listed elsewhere) comprises papers relating to J. C. Owen's ordination, 1883; a letter and other papers concerning the church and parish of Llanafan Fawr [1910]-1911; a copy of Y Dyddiadur Methodistaidd, 1864, with manuscript entries of preaching and other engagements, disbursements, etc.; miscellaneous papers including a list of vicars of Llanafan Fawr, 1486-1883; and items relating to the work of J. Papers of Elizabeth Baker, 1740-1798, comprising correspondence, 1743-1798; copies of verses, including some relating to the impeachment of Warren Hastings; correspondence relating to legal matters arising from the mining partnership and the ownership of the Nannau estate, 1779-1781; journals relating to silk worms, 1779-1782; and papers concerning politics, literature, and current events, 1740-1798.

Records relating to the administration of the diocese of Llandaff and Dean and Chapter of Llandaff Cathedral from the seventeenth century, comprising episcopal registers, bishops' transcripts, marriage bonds and affidavits, and chapter act books, as well as records relating to: the ordination, appointment and resignation of clergymen and other individuals; the licensing of curates and other individuals; the licensing and consecration of land and buildings; faculty papers; dilapidations and sequestrations; augmentations, the creation of new parishes and boundary changes; dissenters' meeting houses; episcopal revenues and accounts; charities; parochial returns; deeds; consistory courts; visitations; correspondence; and miscellaneous volumes and papers.

Additional papers of the Diocese of Llandaf comprising the Bishop's Visitations for 2002 and 2006 - 9 large archive boxes in April 2015.

Deeds collect by J. Augusta Berry, mainly relating to properties in Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, 1753-1865.

The fonds comprises case papers, 1903-1973, dealing with interested parties within Wales and/or the London area who had some sort of Welsh connection. Included are papers dealing with land and property transfer, receivership and company liquidation, defamation and compensation, opposition to parliamentary bills, the settlement of personal estate, contempt of court and general legal matters. Not all of the issues addressed in the files actually resulted in court cases. The majority of the files consist of legal papers such as instructions and notes to counsel, briefs to counsel, opinions of counsel, affidavits, statements, declarations, summonses, claims and orders, often in draft form or as official copies, and solicitors' charges and bills. These are usually accompanied by correspondence made up of original letters and copy letters, both office copies and carbon copies, as well as handwritten notes and occasional telegrams, bills and receipts. Frequently, the files also contain associated documents such as copies of leases, agreements and deeds, plans and maps, accounts, reports and transcriptions of evidence, together with relevant printed material such as sale particulars, parliamentary bills and published reports.
