An album compiled by T. Lewis Old, Aberystwyth, containing printed matter, press cuttings, and correspondence relating to the National Eisteddfod and in particular to the accompanying Singing Festival ('Gymanfa Ganu Genedlaethol') held at Aberystwyth in August, 1916. A few items at the end relate to a similar Singing Festival held in conjunction with the National Eisteddfod at Birkenhead in September, 1917.

A volume of press cuttings, with some additional manuscript notes, of a column entitled 'O'r Gell Gymysg' published in Y Genedl y 'Gwyn ap Gwilym' [i.e. J. Wynne Parry, Caernarvon]. The column relates to Caernarvon antiquities ('Hen Gaernarfon').

Five letters, 1949-51, from David Jones to Mildred Mary Ede, mother of Jim Ede, founder of Kettle's Yard, Cambridge. The letters refer mainly to the painting 'Vexilla Regis' purchased by Mrs Ede and now at Kettle's Yard. Also included is a letter, 1951, from David Baxandall of the Manchester City Art Gallery, concerning a proposed exhibition.

A record book of Bwlchnewydd Congregational church, Carmarthenshire containing a register of members, 1848-1851, deaths and burials, 1855-1885, church reports for the years 1945 and 1959, notes, 1946-1996, relating to the history of the church, and extracts, 1857, from an earlier register, including a list of baptisms, 1805-1841, members, c. 1810, and other memoranda, 1809-1843.

A volume issued, 1828, to the antiqury Angharad Llwyd, Tyn-y-rhyl, Flintshire, for the collection of subscriptions towards St David's Welsh Church, Liverpool, but utilised by her as a commonplace and autograph book. Verse and prose entries, 1830-1853, mostly of a religious nature, include autograph poetry by John Jones (Tegid), Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc), and Bryan Waller Procter (Barry Cornwall), and entries by Sir John Bernard Bosanquet, Lady Charlotte Guest, Augusta Hall, Lady Llanover, Henry Hart Milman, David Pennant, William Owen[-Pughe], Thomas Raffles, Henry Raikes, John Bird Sumner, and Frances Wrangham. Also included is a letter of address, 1828, to Angharad Llwyd from the Rev. Robert Davies, perpetual curate of St David's Church (f. iii).

Papers relating to Grŵp Pennant Group [later Cymdeithas Thomas Pennant Society], an organisation established in the early 1990s by a group of admirers of Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), esquire, learned scientist and antiquary of Downing, Whitford, Flintshire. They include its constitution, 1998, biographical information on Thomas Pennant, photocopies of articles about him and a list of some of the plants mentioned by him in his writings and their present-day names compiled by Goronwy Wynne.

An illuminated genealogical and heraldic chart compiled in 1866 by Albany Wallace of Worthing, co. Sussex, formerly of Bayswater, co. Middlesex, showing the descent of the Rhys family of Cuffern and Scotsborough, co. Pembroke, who later took the surname Stokes, from Rhys ap Tewdwr, king of Deheubarth, through the families of Warren of Trewarren, Wogan of Wiston, co. Pembroke, and Clement of Caron and Genau'r Glyn, co. Cardigan. The genealogical details, enclosed in decorative cartouches, and the accompanying painted coats of arms are on paper, cut out and pasted on a cardboard base.

A small volume written in the eighteenth century lettered on the spine 'Llyvr Dos=parth a Cadwe= digaeth Cerdd Dannau, I'. The scribe was David Jones ('Dewi Fardd') of Trefriw. The contents are as follows: pp. 1-23, 'Clod Cerdd ai Dechreuad' beginning 'Fy Mryd sydd ar hyn om llafur ddwyn ar ddeall it Darllewr . . . Eithr o arfer Cerdd Theoricall y Nef, ni ymadroddwn am dano' [cf. B.M. Addit. MS 14989, ff. 82 recto-111 verso, and also D. Vychan'), being probably in the autograph of Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg'. There is a triad on p.54. On the fly-leaf in a later hand is written 'Dosparth Cerdd Dafod'.

A typewritten copy of the will, with inventory, of Jasper Griffyth, clerk, vicar of Hinckley, co. Leicester, proved in the archdeaconry court of Leicester, [28 May] 1614, with a covering letter, 1940, from Eleanor Swift, Archivist, Leicester City Museum, to W. Ll. Davies (afterwards Sir William Ll. Davies), Librarian of the National Library of Wales.

An interleaved copy of Christoph Helwig, Theatrum historicum et chronologicum . . ., Ed. sexta (Oxoniae, 1662), with some manuscript additions (the solar cycle, lunar cycle, Dominical letter, the date of Easter, and the corresponding year in the Hegira or Mohammedan era, etc.). Written on some of the blank leaves at the beginning and end of the volume are genealogical memoranda concerning the family of Humphrey Humphreys, bishop of Bangor and afterwards of Hereford (see also the note facing p. 178), and facing one of the pages of the Index there is a list of dates concerning William Lloyd, bishop of St. Asaph.

A copy of Y Dyddiadur Methodistaidd am 1920 . . . containing manuscript entries giving the names of preachers who were to fulfil or had fulfilled preaching engagements [? at Maengwyn Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Machynlleth], 1920-1927.

Miscellaneous data (typewritten) relating to the parish of Llandwrog, co. Caernarvon, including extracts from a lay subsidy roll, 1663, a hearth tax return, 1664, an assessment for church mise, 1743, and a land tax assessment, 1788; incomplete lists of the rectors, 1652-1936, curates, 1633-1896, and churchwardens, 1739-1812; lists of freeholders, jurors, and electors, mid-sixteenth century - 1794; etc. The whole has been bound in the form of a small booklet.

?Holograph copies of the words and music of two songs entitled 'Y Llyn' and 'Y Môr', both the words and music being by [Hugh Davies, 1853- ] 'Alltud yr Andes'; press cuttings containing poems by the said Hugh Davies; and a holograph letter from R. E. Jones (nephew of Hugh Davies), Cynwyd, Corwen, to [? the Librarian, the National Library of Wales], 1938 (information relating to his uncle).

Ten holograph letters, August-September 1813, from [Lady] M[aria] J[osepha] S[tanley] from Parkgate and Winnington, to [her husband] Sir John Tho[ma]s Stanley, [7th] bart. [later baron Stanley of Alderley, co. Chester], at Chester and Penrhos, co. Anglesey (personal and family news, news of acquaintances, financial matters, the appointment of [Robert] Southey as poet laureate, references to the war in Europe, e.g., the Austrian manifesto, the wounding of General Moreau, a proposed blockade of Tortosa, affairs in Sicily, etc., an invitation to recipient to attend a meeting at Manchester in connection with a society for converting Jews).

Journal, 1880-1917, of the Rev. William Rees, minister of the Independent Church ['Yr Hen Gapel'] in the village of Llechryd, co. Cardigan, 1864-1880, and of Tabernacle Church in the same village, 1880-19 [ ]. The latter church had been established and a new chapel built by the said William Rees and his followers in 1880, after they had seceded from the Independent Church as a result of friction arising from conflicting views on a number of topics. The contents of the volume consist basically of an account of the writer's life and of the history of the new church from 1880 onwards, but the narrative is interspersed with lengthy passages and entire sections devoted to religious and moral declamation and mysticism. The writer sometimes expresses his thoughts in verse. Biographical data relating to the writer's life prior to 1880 are found on pp. 437 et seq. Inset are a holograph letter from W. A. Williams (honorary secretary of the New Church Missionary Society), Swansea, to [the Rev. William] Rees, 1914 (greetings from the Society's annual assembly), and a holograph letter from John Thomas, Llandilo, also by inference to William Rees, 1911 (an invitation to preach in Horeb Chapel, Llandilo).

A volume containing an account by a midshipman of his service on board H.M.S. Ranger and H.M.S. Doris on duty in South American waters, 1825-1828. Amongst the ports the ships called at were Monte Video, Buenos Ayres, Rio [de] Janeiro, and St. Catharine's, on the eastern, and Valparaiso, Talcahuano, Arica, Islay, Pisco, and Callao, on the western seaboard of South America. A visit was also made to the island of Juan Fernandez. At the reverse end of the volume are transcripts of miscellaneous late seventeenth and early eighteenth century memoranda and accounts, including tithe accounts of [the Reverend] Thomas Nepiker, rector of Bepton [co. Sussex].

Two note-books containing miscellaneous Welsh verse including poems by John Williams ('Ioan ap Griffith') of Rhiwbryfdir [Blaenau Ffestiniog] (second half nineteenth cent.), and one English poem by the said John Williams.

A manuscript music book, with some annotations in pencil, containing lessons, songs, dances and airs for the harp in the hand of Elizabeth Giffard (1766-1842) of Nerquis Hall, Flintshire (for Elizabeth Giffard's dates of birth and death see e.g. Peter Howell Williams, 'Elizabeth Giffard of Nerquis Hall' in Hanes Bro Clwyd, 27 (Autumn 1991), pp. 2-11; cf. her signature in NLW Caerhun collection, 240-1, and in her will (NLW SA 1844/158)).
The title of each work and, in some cases, the name of the composer, is noted for each piece. Several of the pieces (pp. 17, 24, 26, 29, 30, 33, 39, 66 (titled the 'Nerquis March'), 69, 75, 89) are by Benjamin Cunnah (will proved 1840), organist of Ruabon, Denbighshire, and composer of New Welch Music: Consisting of Three Sonatas, Chase Minuets, Siciliano, Rondos, Marches, Airs with Variations for the Harp or Piano Forte (London, 18--). Several Welsh airs are included (pp. 10, 12, 21 ('Ar Hyd y Nos'), 22 ('Codiad yr Ehedydd'), 23 ('Nos Galan'), 25 ('Pen y Rhaw'), 71 ('Ar Hyd y Nos'), 84-85 ('The March of [the] Men of Harlech'), 280-1 ('Morfa Rhuddlan')). Above the piece entitled 'Midnight Cerus' (p. 89) Elizabeth Giffard has noted 'Blowed June 29 1807 at Nerquis Hall'. At the end of the volume (pp. 278-286) are some technical exercises for the harp together with instructions for tuning the instrument and for pedalling. A warrant, signed 2 January 1689/[90] at Whitehall Treasury Chambers, by [Charles Mordaunt, earl of] Monmouth [later 3rd earl of Peterborough], and [Henry Booth, 2nd baron] Delamer [later 1st earl of Warrington], and directed to Sir Robert Howard, Kt., auditor of the receipt of the royal exchequer, authorising the recipient to draw an order for the payment to Edward Jones, gent., receiver general of the 'Present ayd for the County of Carmarthen', of a sum of eight pounds 'for his Extraordinary charges and trouble in returning and paying' at Chester and in London, the sums he had collected as royal aid in his allotted area.
