Important mediæval manuscripts and later literary and historical manuscripts, [12 cent, first ½]-[late 19 cent.], reflecting the collecting interests of the Maurice and Owen families of Clenennau and Brogyntyn.
They include an important mid-fifteenth century miscellany of prose and verse in Middle English (Brogyntyn MS II.1); English and Welsh poetry; plays; astrology and prophecies; chronicles of the history of Britain, one of which is a thirteenth century version of Historia Regum Britanniæ of Geoffrey of Monmouth (Brogyntyn MS I.7); a lute book, [c. 1595] (Brogyntyn MS I.27); a copy of the laws of Hywel Dda [1625x1632] (Brogyntyn MS I.12); legal precedents and other papers of legal interest in Latin and English; pedigrees, genealogy and heraldry of North and South Wales families; religious treatises, prayers, devotions and sermons; a seventeenth-century Latin-Welsh dictionary and other manuscripts of linguistic interest; extracts from classical literature; commonplace books; academic notes; copies of significant historical letters and documents; political tracts; moralistic and philosophical works; memoranda, journals and private papers of members of the Anwyl and Owen families; a few Brogyntyn estate and trust papers, 1727-1792; and notes on public offices and official papers deriving from the administration of Oswestry Corporation, 1660, 1673. Some ancilliary materials, [19 cent, second ½]-[1960s], mostly correspondence and notes relating to individual manuscripts, are also included (MSS I.27a, II.1a, II.10a, II.22a, II.42a, II.54(h), II.56a).

The first and main accrual, made in 1977, comprising some twenty-one boxes and described elsewhere, reflects J. R. Jones' valuable contribution to nationalist and religious philosophy, and his wider contribution to the field of philosophy and his specific interest in the nature of the self. -- The first deposit is mainly in Welsh and the catalogue prepared at NLW is also in Welsh. It consists mainly of his publications, books, pamphlets and articles, together with his academic notes. The correspondence is scarce, no more than forty individual letters, but there is an extensive collection of newspaper cuttings containing annotations in his hand. -- The second group, described here, consists mainly of notes dating from his period as a student and as a lecturer. However, it does also include a small collection of offprints and other printed material, together with some personal possesions once belonging to Professor A. E. Heath. -- Despite the fact that the notebooks have been arranged into two series, notes taken as a student and notes used to deliver lectures, there is some evidence to suggest that the earlier notes were used at a later date to prepare lectures. Some notebooks belonging to the same series are split between the two accruals - attention has been drawn to this whenever possible.

Papers relating to the activities of David Davies, Llandinam, including relating to contracting in the construction of railways, the establishment of the Ocean Coal Co. Ltd, legal papers collected for the 1883 and 1884 Barry Dock Bills, and his son Edward Davies's letter-books.

Records, 1860-1990, of the Governing Body of the Church in Wales, relating to the administrative and decision making processes of the Body.

Papers mainly relating to the published work of Herbert Stanley Jevons, 1895-1963, correspondence on overseas development, coal and economics, 1909-1949; correspondence on housing in Wales, 1912-1914; papers relating to Ethiopia, 1935-1955, including correspondence with Emperor Haile Selassie I, 1937-1953; letters between Herbert Stanley Jevons and John Maynard Keynes, 1930-1936.

The catalogued material comprises two groups of deeds and other documents relating to lands of the Bodwenni and Syrior estates in Merionethshire, Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire, and to the Roberts, Williams and Evans families of Bodwenni and Syrior, [13th century]-1833; miscellaneous literary manuscripts, [16th century]-[19th cenury]; and printed material. Uncatalogued material includes deeds, family papers and correspondence, 1609-1953.

Family papers and estate records of the Griffin family of Newton House, Dixton, Monmouthshire, comprising deeds and documents, 1635-1869, relating mainly to properties in the parish of Dixton, and correspondence, 1818-1863, mainly relating to a dispute between Mary Griffin of Newton House and the vicar and churchwarden of St Peter church, Dixton, in 1862.

A collection of miscellaneous letters and papers, 1757-1993, purchased or received by donation from various sources by the National Library of Wales during the period June 2008-May 2013 and boxed as one volume.

Papers, 1832-1858, of the Francis family, of Goginan, Cardiganshire, comprising papers, 1834-1858, relating to the Francis family, amongst them business and personal correspondence, especially mining matters and property owned by the family, and a few other miscellaneous papers; records, 1835-1858, concerning individual mines, including agents' reports, letters, notices and reports of meetings, sketch maps, cost sheets, financial papers, mine cost books, memoranda of agreement, transfers of mine management, darft mining prospectuses, etc.; mine reports, 1847-1858, written by Matthew Francis and Absalom Francis; mine reports, 1845-1857, prepared by various other individuals; miscellaneous correspondence, 1842-1857, relating to various mines; correspondence, 1837-1852, relating to the ticketing and assaying of ores; sketch maps and sections, all undated; correspondence, 1843-1858, concerning water power; general correspondence files, 1841-1858, relating mainly to mining matters; and the Smythe collection containing very miscellaneous material, including some letters, 1840-1841 and 1847-1856, and tradesmen's vouchers and mine costs, 1834-1838 and 1850-1855.

Deeds and legal papers relating to the Crosswood estate, Cardiganshire, 1631, 1705-1820, and to the Plas Llangoedmor estate, 1808-1898, mainly in Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire.

Music manuscripts in the Cwrtmawr collection, comprising 18th-20th century tune-books containing both sacred and secular music.

Papers, [1730x1893], of the Roberts family of Llanbrynmair and of the Howell family of Bontdolgadfan, Llanbrynmair and comprising mainly correspondence, together with sermons, broadsides and miscellanea. The material was preserved by David Howell, Machynlleth and Aberdyfi, cousin of the Reverend Samuel Roberts ('S.R.') and father of the donor, Joseph Matthew Howell.

Papers, 1830-1930, of or relating to John Thomas (Pencerdd Gwalia), including original musical manuscripts, mainly compositions and arrangements for the harp, 1853-1905; correspondence mainly relating to his concerts, compositions and travels, and to musical circles in London and Wales, 1842-1930; journals of European concert tours, 1851-1883; concert programmes, 1851-1905; papers of his wife, Joan Frances Thomas, 1878-1926, including tour journals, 1878-1883; and passports, 1873, 1885.

The papers comprise music manuscripts of the composer and viola player Kenneth Harding (1903-1992), comprising scores and instrumental parts of orchestral works, chamber music, songs and a number of works for the viola.

The archive includes letters and greetings cards, 1953-1972, and correspondence and papers, 1966-1972, deriving from the many groups and societies with which Olwen Caradoc Evans was associated, including the steering committee of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and the Nant Conway Rural District Council. There are also family correspondence and papers, 1935-1945, and a file of personal correspondence, 1995-[1998]. There are also biographical and family papers, 1917-1941, research papers, 1904-1988, relating to the ancestry of Dr John Caeradoc Evans; research papers, 1846-1985, concerning the ancestry of Olwen Caradoc Evans herself; and press cuttings and photographs, 1967-1990. There are papers concerning 'Tu Hwnt i'r Bont', 1953-1959, notes relating to her research and business enterprises, 1960-1991, and printed material, 1952-1997.

Papers, 1885-[1922x1936], of Ernest Richmond Horsfall Turner, largely of Montgomeryshire interest. They include extracts, notes and draft essays relating to Llanidloes and Montgomeryshire history, including the Chartist movement within that county; addresses prepared for local societies, meetings, etc.; correspondence; and compositions submitted for the Llanidloes Eisteddfod of 1912; together with poetry by John Newton Crowther (Glanceri), Horsfall Turner's father-in-law.

One hundred and thirty-two letters and cards, 1959-1967, from Helen Thomas to Terence Cooper, London, containing mainly personal news and comments on Edward Thomas; also included are two letters, 1962-1965, from Myfanwy Thomas, daughter of Helen and Edward Thomas (ff. 45, 144).

Correspondence and other papers, 1805-[?late 20 cent.], relating to the soprano Adelina Patti and to her friend Edward Hall, Box Office Manager at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden.
The papers comprise: (i) Some eight letters (one an envelope only), 1893-1898, from Adelina Patti, at Craig-y-Nos Castle, Nice and Paris, to Edward Hall, London (ff. 3-5, 9-25), together with one letter to Hall from [?Pittman], Ystalyfera, 10 August 1883 (ff. 1-2), and a letter from Patti, in Indianapolis, 1 January 1894, to [?W. E.] Gladstone (ff. 6-8); (ii) typescript transcripts of the Adelina Patti letters, [?late 20 cent.] (11 ff.); (iii) some twenty-seven newspaper cuttings, December 1893-February 1894, relating to Patti's tour of America, apparently sent to Edward Hall from Toronto, possibly by Patti herself; (iv) photographs, postcards and ephemera relating to Patti, 1889-1984; (v) an insert book for the EMI long play record 'Adelina Patti' (RLS 711), 1973; (vi) copies of five newspapers, 1805-1809, containing news relating to the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, together with a few other printed items, 1875, 1925, concerning the Theatre and Edward Hall; and (vii) largely unrelated items, comprising photographs of Nellie Melba, [?1911], Queen Elizabeth [the Queen Mother], [?1940s], and a 'Souvenir Programme of the Visit of… the Duke and Duchess of York to Cardiff... and Blaina', [1932].

Papers, 1946-2017, of Captain Ted Lees, relating to Island Farm Prisoner of War Camp, Bridgend. Captain Lees was the camp's Intelligence Officer and interpreter during the period 1946-1948, when it held some of the most senior German officers, including Feldmarschall Gerd von Rundstedt.
The papers include a nominal roll of senior prisoners compiled by Lees (ff. i-ii, I-XVI); some eighteen letters to Lees, from von Rundstedt and others, 1946-1948, 1957 (ff. 1-21); a typescript statement by von Rundstedt concerning the Blomberg-Fritsch affair of 1938 (ff. 22-25); a typescript memorandum, dated 9 July 1947, from a prisoner to a 'Herr Bieri' [?Frederick Bieri of the IRCC], concerning the Geneva Convention (ff. 30-36); Lees's manuscript recollections of von Rundstedt, 1953 (ff. 54-57); and a copy of a War Office urgent memorandum (U.M./4202(P.W.1m)), dated 8 September 1947, enclosing a categorised nominal roll of senior German officers detained in the UK (ff. 38-53). Also included are a letter to Lees's wife from von Rundstedt, 10 February 1948 (f. 12), a Christmas card from Voss, made in camp, [1946x1948] (f. 17), a note from Voss certifying the handing over of medals to Captain Lees, [1946x1948] (f. 18), and correspondence, 1957, between Lees, Wilhelm Bauer de Betaz and a Manchester bank, concerning the whereabouts of Bauer de Betaz's medals (ff. 19-21). Items subsequently added to the papers include typescript translations of two of the letters into English (ff. 7, 15), photocopies of parts of the Blomberg-Fritsch and Geneva Convention typescripts (ff. 26-29, 37, kept for conservation purposes) and printouts of web pages relating to Lees and von Rundstedt, 2010, 2017 (ff. 62-64).
