Worst public meeting row I ever witnessed. 10,000 people outside trying to break into the meeting - surging, struggling, fighting, yelling meanwhile like savages. ... For 20 minutes I stood facing a shouting, surging, yelping, fighting crowd. The fights in the body of the hall were quite menacing. ... The roughs attacked our carriage as we drove from the meeting - the glass was smashed & one of the occupants of the carriage had his hand badly cut. They didn't touch me'.
