Edward Herbert of Cherbury: For a Dyal

An autograph Latin poem (8 lines) by Edward Lord Herbert of Cherbury and Castleisland, written on the end-paper (p. 818) of his copy of Antonio de Herrara, Tercera parte de la historia general del mvndo ... (Madrid: por Alonso Martin de Balboa, 1612). The poem begins 'Discurrens dubiae placidus, compendia vitae' and is signed 'E. H: 12. Sept. 1612'. Published posthumously with the title 'For a Dyal' and with some textual differences in Occasional verse of Edward Lord Herbert, baron of Cherbery and Castle-Island, deceased in August, 1648 (London, 1665).

A notebook containing an account, 16-22 December 1941, in diary form with interleaved carbon copy, of part of a wartime voyage from Liverpool to the Seychelles via Durban by Joseph Boumphrey (see also NLW MS 22633i-iiA). An unbound typescript account of the same voyage, 16 December 1941-28 December 1942, by his wife has been tipped in between ff. 17 and 29 of the notebook (see Mewn Gwisg Nyrs: Atgofion Annie Boumphrey (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, 1990)).

A photocopy of the first page of an autograph sermon of the Reverend Titus Lewis (1773-1811), Carmarthen, also found loose inside the volume, has been tipped in (MS 22691iA, f. i). The original sermon [?February 1802], but with the first page wanting, is to be found in NLW MS 18995A, pp. 212-14.

They contain names of tenants sworn as homage and as affeerors, names of those appointed manorial officers, lists of court leet jurors together with a few presentments by them. Also included are four letters, 1918-1940s, three of which relate to manorial business.

The memoirs of Evan Williams (1887-1975), Brynaman and Llandudno, written 1944-1946, containing his recollections of life in the coalmining community of Brynaman, co. Carmarthen, 1890s-1933, with special reference to music and religion. An essay by Evan Williams 'Atgofion am fro arbennig a'i chymeriadau' was awarded part of the 'Llandybïe Prize' at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Bala, 1967. For a summary of his reminiscences of his father William Richard Williams (1855-1922) see 'Y Dysgedydd', 148 (1968), 86-90.
