Music manuscripts, etc., of D. Afan Thomas, comprising instrumental music, 1909-1922; vocal music, namely ballads, monologues and cantatas, 1912-1923; songs, [1890s]- 1928; part-songs 1899-1918; anthems, magnificats and chants, 1904-1923; hymns, [1890s]-[1928] and carols, [c. 1900]-1927; and letters and papers, consisting of letters to Afan, 1902-1928; letters from Afan, 1903-[1928]; miscellaneous letters, 1883-1949, and miscellaneous papers, 1883-[c. 1944], including the manuscript of the biography by Rev. William Evans ('Wil Ifan'), Afan, a Welsh Music Maker [Cardiff 1944].

The fonds consists of administrative records and accounts, 1974-1998, of the Association of Visual Artists in Wales, formerly the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales, comprising material relating to both its national and regional activities.

Miscellaneous deeds and documents, mainly relating to properties in co. Card., 1675-1902, co. Caern, 1546-1860, co. Carm., 1702-1914, co. Denb., 1575-1850, co. Flint, 1770-1776, co. Glam., [13 cent.?]-1924, co. Mer., 1598-1890, co. Mont., 1465-1877, co. Mon., 1630-1775, co. Pemb., 1753-1930, co. Rad., 1706-1840, Cheshire, 1703-1789, Gloucestershire, 1656-1788, Herefordshire, 1594-1772, Shropshire, 1710-1809, and Ireland, 1671-1922.

The fonds comprises letters from Edwards to various members of his family, 1882-1920, together with letters to him from his wife, son, daughter and other members of the family and early family papers, 1804-1943; letters from friends, leading figures in Welsh public life and academic associates, 1880-1920; diaries and notebooks, 1875-1920; papers deriving from his work as a publisher and editor, 1890-1920, and as Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales, 1907-1920. There are also some papers relating to the proposed biography of Edwards, and a collection of printed material accumulated by him.

Estate and family records of the family of Walsh (also Benn, Benn-Walsh), later barons Ormathwaite, of Radnorshire, including rentals and surveys, 1865-1939; deeds relating to premises purchased in Radnorshire, 1558-1912, and deeds relating to mortgages and sales of parts of the same estate, 1875-1947; estate papers, 1844-1943; family papers, [late 1690s]-1920, including diaries of Sir John Benn Walsh, 1st Baron Ormathwaite (1798-1881), politician, 1811-1877, diaries of his mother, Lady Margaret Walsh, 1788-1828, and diaries of Arthur John Walsh, 2nd Baron Ormathwaite, 1848-1917. -- The BRA deposit relates mainly to the marriage settlement, mortgages, bankruptcy, receivership and executorship of Arthur Henry John Walsh (1859-1937), 3rd Baron Ormathwaite, 1841-1951.

A further three boxes of papers relating to the family was received, together with a portrait of Jane Walsh and a collection of photographs. This deposit remains uncatalogued.

Records of the Dunraven estate, principally in Glamorgan, belonging to the Wyndham and Wyndham-Quin families of Dunraven Castle, Glamorgan, earls of Dunraven, and of Clearwell, Gloucestershire, and papers of the associated families of Edwin and Thomas of Llanfihangel-juxta-Cowbridge, including deeds, [early 13 cent.]-1939, mainly for lands in Glamorgan; rentals, surveys and accounts, 1348-1483, 1688-1951, mainly relating to properties in Glamorgan; manorial records, 1548-1936, relating chiefly to numerous manors in Glamorgan, legal papers, 1685-1895; and correspondence, 1791-1918.

Papers of George Eyre Evans, 1669-1939, including personal papers; family papers; notes, transcripts, correspondence and other papers relating to his religious and antiquarian interests and to his publications; copies of printed books and journals with insertions and annotations; and various original manuscripts collected by him.

Family and estate papers of the Heaton family of Plas Heaton, comprising mainly of deeds, 1381-1908, relating to estates in Denbighshire, Flintshire, Norfolk and the city of Chester.

Papers relating to Thomas Parker and his estate in Kidwelly, 1761-1818; papers of Louisa Parker, comprising mainly letters received by her, 1790-1833, and drafts of outgoing correspondence, notes and memoranda, 1822-1832; diaries, account books, etc., 1808-1832; papers relating to the Allihies copper mine, 1817-1837; papers relating to the London estate [parish of St Katherine Cree] of Lousia Parker, 1819-1832; deeds and documents for properties in Kidwelly, 1698-1832; papers relating to the administration of the estates of Mr and Mrs Parker, 1833-1838; inventories, catalogues and valuations, 1818-1833; letters and accounts of the executors, 1818-1847; and miscellanea, 1807-1825.

Papers relating to Hughes a'i Fab, Cyhoeddwyr, including correspondence, 1887-1975; financial papers, 1947-1976; business papers, 1830-1971 and printing and publishing material, [1930-1975]. There are many letters from prominent Welsh authors regarding their work being published and papers concerning the history and general administration of the company.

Manuscripts, [16 cent.]-1930, consisting to a large extent of the collections of the Rev. John Montgomery Traherne of Coedriglan, Glamorgan and of members of his family and that of the Mansel Franklen family of St Hilary, Glamorgan. A minor group included in the collection (MSS 6606-6615) represents the papers of William Davies, Cringell, near Neath, Glamorgan. The material includes correspondence of John Montgomery Traherne and correspondence and other material of or relating to John Walters, rector of Llandough; nineteenth-century music manuscript books, some of which belonged to members of the Talbot family of Penrice and Margam; a manuscript in the hand of Thomas Richards of Coychurch; a notebook of Jean Poingdestre; historical and other material of Glamorgan interest, including material relating to the Stradling family of St Donat's Castle, the Mansel and Talbot families of Margam and Penrice, and Sir Matthew Cradock; a sixteenth-seventeenth-century manuscript of poetry; together with political material, antiquities, pedigrees, transcripts and translations, newspaper cuttings, etc.

Estate records of the Cernioge estate, Denbighshire, and records of the Kenrick family of Cernioge and Nantclwyd, 1502-1856, comprising deeds, 1502-1832, of the Cernioge estate; rentals, 1664-1771, 1806-1813; transcripts of documents relating to the abbey of Conway; and correspondence, 1806-1827.

Papers of Winifred Coombe Tennant, 1897-1957, relating to her activities with Gorsedd y Beirdd and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, and also including correspondence with artists, patrons and art administrators and related material concerning her patronage of the arts in Wales; together with her diaries, 1897-1955.

Deeds relating to the Hendrefelen estate, 1546-1885, in Cardiganshire, Brecon and Manchester, including a faculty from the bishop of St Davids enabling Edward Richard to set up a library at Ystrad Meurig.

Further manuscripts comprise a notebook, typescripts of two plays and letters.

Deeds, letters and miscellaneous papers of the families of Williams, Jones and Jones-Bateman of Pentre Mawr in the parish of Abergele, Denbighshire, relating almost entirely to properties in the parish of Abergele.

Deeds and documents relating mainly to premises in Merioneth and Caernarfonshire, 1653-1782. Some of deeds relate to premises acquired by John Garnons, but most appear to belong to premises owned by his clients.

The archive contains a wealth of statistical information about the slate industry in Caernarfonshire, Merioneth and Pembrokeshire and the development of Porthmadog as a slate port.
