Caerwys historical notes

Manuscript and typescript material relating to the history of the parish of Caerwys, Flintshire, including 'Caerwys Historical Notes by Sir J. Herbert Lewis (based on the Reminiscences of R. Lewis, John Brunnan and other natives of Caerwys, interviewed by him, and on documentary evidence of Caerwyson, author of a prize-essay on 'Caerwys ei Hynafiaethau a'i Heisteddfodau' and various MSS.' (incomplete); 'The Eisteddfodau of Caerwys (A.D. 1523 and 1568)'; 'Caerwys during the Roman Occupation'; 'Queries re. doubtful forms & locations of certain places'; bibliographical references; an inscribed presentation copy by the editor to J. Herbert Lewis of J. H. Davies (ed.): The Roll of the Caerwys Eisteddfod of 1523 [Liverpool, 1910]; etc. Also included is a holograph letter from J. Herbert Lewis, Penucha, Caerwys, to [E.] Stanton Roberts, 1932 (comments on a manuscript left for the writer's perusal).

General correspondence

Some ninety-eight letters, postcards and telegrams, 1898-1940, addressed to Annie J. Davies (later Ellis, later Hughes-Griffiths). The correspondents include [E.] Vincent Evans, T. Gwynn Jones (3), J. Herbert Lewis (3), David Lloyd George, Margaret Lloyd George, Lord Rendel (6), C. A. F. Rhys Davids (2), W. Llewelyn Williams and [Sir] John Williams (2).
Also included are some six miscellaneous family letters; together with a letter, 25 February 1911, from J. Lloyd Williams to Mrs Mary Davies (Mair Mynorydd) concerning the work of the Welsh Folksong Society (presumably passed on by Mary Davies to her friend Annie Ellis).

The letters, 1895-1925, discuss Welsh political life, the attempts to regenerate Mudiad Cymru Fydd, historical records relating to Flintshire, the foundation of the National Library of Wales, its location at Aberystwyth, and appeals for increased government funding and the passage of the copyright legislation, developments at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the federal University of Wales, the possibility of establishing a Public Record Office for Wales, and the selection of Liberal candidates in Welsh constituencies for the 'Coupon' General Election of December 1918.
