Papers relating to William Edward Davies (b.1801), Edward Davies (b.1806), and Pryce Davies (1808-1887), children of Edward and Harriott (nee Morris) Davies, Maesmawr. The file contains notes of the dates of birth of William (b.1801) and his sister Harriott (b.1800), taken from the Newtown Register (1828); two letters from Charles E. Howell, Welsh Pool (1888), re the affairs of Pryce Davies; certificate of witness for the marriage of Edward Davies (b.1806) and Clara Jones, by Mary (sister of Edward) and Carlo Tiesset (1880); notes on the marriages made by the children of Edward Davies, Maesmawr Hall (1769-1841), including Anne, William, John, Edward, Jane, Pryce, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Maria; a pedigree of Davies family (1945 or later); and letters from A. Whitmore family papers

Documents relating to the Whitmore family, who became connected to Maesmawr Hall following the marriage of Elizabeth Davies (1772-1833) daughter of Pryce Davies, Maesmawr Hall, to Richard Whitmore. The file consists of correspondence, including six letters from Elizabeth Whitmore (nee Davies) to her brother Rev. J. Davies, Fronfelen (1819-1820, 1826-1827), two letters to Rev. J. Davies from his niece, Elizabeth's daughter Mary Anne Whitmore (1834), and two letters from Richard Whitmore (1881), one addressed to a Mr Pryce; receipts, consisting of a receipt for payment of legacy duty (1814), and receipts for payment of sums inherited from the wills of Anne Davies and Pryce Davies, Maesmawr (1840); a memorandum of Mary Anne Whitmore (1840); and an invitation for the funeral of Mr William Whitmore (1862), brother to Mary Anne.

Volumes

A collection of bound volumes, together with some unbound material, mainly relating to the Davies family of Maesmawr Hall and the administration of the Maesmawr Hall estate. The volumes include account books (1685-1853 inclusive); tithe apportionments ([19th cent.]); memorandum books (1659-1832 inclusive); rentals (1902-1920); sale catalogues (1898-1920 inclusive); domestic and recipe books (1706-1770; [19th cent.]); a sketch book (c.1842); a map of part of the Maesmawr Hall estate [1899]; correspondence (1783-1933 inclusive); a scrapbook of excursions (1892); and various papers relating to legal proceedings (1898-1948 inclusive).

Valuation of the Maesmawr Hall estate

An inventory of the furnishings of Maesmawr Hall, 14 September 1898, together with a number of papers relating to the valuation of the Maesmawr Hall estate, consisting of a Bill of Costs, Webber & Bull Solicitors, 1928-1931; Particulars of Expenditure incurred by Rev. Herbert Davies in connection with the Maesmawr Hall estate, 1901-1915, 1919-1920, and 1929-1939; a valuation of the estate, 1915 or later; a statement in connection with the realisation of the estate, 1920; statements of proceeds of sale of lots, 1910-1911; statement of costs and payments chargeable against capital, 1913/1914 and 1919-21; and a report and valuation of the Maesmawr Hall Estate, 1938.

Trelydan statements and valuations

Papers relating to the sale of the estates of the Foulkes family, including conditions of sale of estates at Welshpool (including Trelydan) sold to Mrs Dev[ereu]x Pryce, 4 December 1871; a conveyance of the estate of Ann Foulkes, 1871; a statement of the estates of the Foulkes family, Trelydan, 1871; and a valuation of the estate of the Ann Foulkes following her death in 1869, including property in the parishes of Guilsfield, Welshpool, Berriew, Castle Caereinion, Llangadfan, Llanfihangel and Llanfyllin, 1871.

Tiesset de St Amour family papers

Papers relating to the Tiesset de St Amour family, who became connected to Maesmawr through the marriage of Mary Davies (b.1809), daughter of Edward Davies, Maesmawr Hall (1769-1841) to Cassimer Hoppolite Tiesset (also known as Tiesset de St Amour). The file includes two letters, one from Mary's son Charles Auguste Tiesset de St Amour re his aunt Elizabeth Davies (1880), and one from Mary (undated); and a press cutting titled ‘Knightly Order’s Battle with Italian Government’ (1966).

Sketch book of Jane Anne Davies

A sketch book used during the 1840s by Jane Anne Davies of Dolforwyn Hall, Abermule. The book contains pencil sketches and watercolours of local houses and landmarks in and around the Maesmawr estate including Fronfelen, Penstrowed, Maesmawr Hall, and Manafon Church, as well as views from Caernarfonshire including the river Llugwy, Dolwyddelan, and Conwy. A page in the book bears the date 1842.

Sale catalogue

Sale catalogue including particulars of properties on the Maesmawr Hall estate, including the farms ‘The Moat’, ‘Llwyncoppa’ and ‘Pantyberth’ in the parishes of Manafon and Berriew, and ‘Bronyrhiew’ cottage, Manafon. Sold at auction at Newtown by Messrs Cooke Bros., November 1910.

Rowlands family papers

Papers relating to the Rowlands family, who became connected to Maesmawr through the marriage of Ann daughter of John Rowlands, Llanvairissa to Pryce Davies of Maesmawr Hall. The file contains notes on monumental inscriptions for the Rowlands family (with dates 1712-1793); a Rowlands pedigree (last date 1814); a copy of the will of Griffith Rowland (1733), with a typescript transcription; a plea from the Great Sessions, Bala, for the case of John Rowlands against Ellin Lloyd (1737), together with a typescript transcription; and a letter from Edward Annwyl, Dolgellau (1794).

Papers relating to the Rev. John Davies, of Maesmawr and Fronfelen (1770-1853), comprising an extract of Latin verse compiled by him at Wadham College (1787); a copy of claims for lands at Maesmawr, Llandinam (1819); five letters from Rev. John Davies (1818, 1846, 1852); exparte of the purchase of the settled estates of Edward Viscount Clive (1831); a bill of costs for case in the Montgomeryshire Great Session (1819), between Rev, John Davies, plaintiff, and Edward Davies, defendant; receipts for payment in the cases of Davies vs Davies and Davies vs Ashton (1821); a letter from Walter Davies, re election to the Newtown and Llanidloes Board of Guardians (1837); a book of anecdotes for dinners (undated); and an undated sketch of the Rev. Papers relating to the Rev. Herbert Davies (1871-1945) son of Robert George Davies and Isabella Crabbe. The papers consist of correspondence, including letters from Lalonde Bros & Parham, Auctioneers (3) (1939, 1946) together with schedule of fixtures and fittings at 91 Pembroke Road, Clifton, letters to Herbert Davies (2) (1898, 1922), J. Documents outlining the case of Pryce's Settled Estates, 1921, consisting of will of John Pryce Davies dated 12th November 1819; Double Probate of the will of Jane Anne Pryce dated 27th September 1898; appointment of the new trustees of the will of Mrs Jane Anne Pryce deceased dated 30th May 1914; settlement dated 21st June 1911, with affidavit of the Rev. Herbert Davies filed on behalf of the applicant; and a Draft Summons dated 1921.

Papers relating to Pryce Davies (1731-1813) and Edward Davies (b.1735), Maesmawr, consisting of an agreement between Thomas Bever and Pryce Davies (1778), being a Faculty for a Seal in Llandinam; notes from Llandinam Parish Register, re Davies family (1832); a bill from Mr Corbett (1758); a copy of the marriage certificate of Edward Davies and Susanna Couchman (1764); a letter from Pryce Davies (1799); and a bill of probate of the will of Pryce Davies (1813).

An envelope containing a leather bound wallet stamped ‘Price Davies Maesmawr J768’, together with a list of contributors to farewell presentations made to Rev. Herbert Davies from the churches of St John the Baptist, Glastonbury (1922), and St Anne's, Syston (1945), with a pamphlet for the church roof appeal, Syston (1962); and a copy of an article titled ‘Causes Célèbres relating to property in Montgomeryshire (No. 3)’, by E.
