A butcher's ledger

A butcher's ledger, the entries covering the period 1882-1904. Settled accounts bear the signature of William Lloyd. Included amongst insets are bill heads of William Lloyd, butcher, Cardigan, and a fragment (three leaves) of a ship's log book, 21-25 October [18]81.

A ledger and account book recording visits paid to patients, medicines supplied, etc., in 1870, ?by W[illiam] L[ane] Noott [doctor, of Cardigan], with annotations recording the settlement of accounts, 1870-1873. Included also is a list of 'Unpaid Bills of Previous Years', and a 'Summary of accounts paid and unpaid for this year 1870'.

A saddler's ledger

A ledger, 1803-1805, of a saddler ?in the town or neighbourhood of Cardigan. Inset are two notes, 18 April and 6 July 1804, from John McEwen, Fynone [parish of Manordeifi, co. Pembroke], to Mr. Meyler, saddler, giving him instructions concerning collars and saddles.

A ledger, 1784-1796, ?of a general stores kept by the Harries family in the town of Cardigan. The amounts entered are shown as being due variously to James Harries, Martha Harries or J. O. Harries, and the settling of accounts is attested by various members of the Harries family.

A ledger of a manure merchant whose distribution area covered south-west Cardiganshire and north-west Pembrokeshire. A fly leaf bears the inscription 'By Manure Ledger Began November 30th 1897. Dd. Jno. Lewis'. The entries cover the period 1892-1906, and accounts settled are signed by or on behalf of Lewis Evans.

A ledger kept by ?Lewis Evans, chemist, of Cardigan. The entries cover the period 1883-1907, and accounts settled are signed by or on behalf of Lewis Evans. A few pages at the end of the ledger relate to transactions involving hay and sheep, 1906-1907. Insets include a holograph letter from John Davies, Globe Inn, Newport, Pem[brokeshire], to [ ], 1907 (a request for payment for sheep bought at Trewilym); and a promissory note for £6/17/3 from David Thomas, Treharris, [co.] Glam[organ], to Lewis Evans, Cardigan, chemist, 1897.

A ledger of a shopkeeper ?in the town or neighbourhood of Cardigan, 1796-1798. An end leaf bears the name of 'J. O. Harries', and some of the pages contain the entries 'By Ballance due to J. O. Harries', and 'Paid J[oh]n Bowen, Esq.'.

Newspaper cuttings

Two note books containing paste-down newspaper cuttings. The first contains cuttings from the [Essex Standard, ?1835], consisting of a series of letters addressed to the editor of that paper by 'A Liberal Conservative' on the subject of 'Dissenters' Grievances', and the second a series of cuttings [?from the same newspaper, 1834] comprising an article entitled 'The Changes in the poor laws. A conversation in the allotment field between a labourer, a minister, and a farmer on the changes in the laws relating to the poor'. The second volume also contains manuscript notes relating to the poor laws extracted from contemporary printed sources, ?in the hand of the Rev. Hector Davies Morgan.

Note books, a volume of sermons, etc., in the hand of [the Rev. Hector Davies Morgan, M.A., curate of Castle Hedingham, co. Essex, ?1809-1846, and prebendary of Trallwng in the collegiate church of Christ, Brecon, 1820-?1846].
12544B: A note book containing English poems entitled 'To Stella on the birth of Mr. John Harrison of Calcutta', 'To Miss [ ] on the birthday of her brother Mr. Thomas Harrison of Bombay', and 'Elegiac Stanzas sacred to the Memory of an Unfortunate Maniac Inscribed to Thomas Slade, Esq.', a poem invoking God's aid for Britain, passages (English) translated from or written in imitation of Horace, Pindar, Tibullus, Arist[otle], etc., and short disputations in Latin or English on academic debating points such as 'Anne amor melior imperii custos an timor' or 'An Cicero plus gloriae adeptus est a Consulatu quam ab exilio'. The volume was compiled or written at Oxford and Pentonville, 1803-1806. Pasted to the inside upper cover is a copy (printed) of An Elegy sacred to the memory of Mr. Richard Harrison who died August 18, 1802, with manuscript emendations.
12545B: Two exercise books, the first containing a Latin poem (161 lines) entitled 'Trafalgar', and the second a poem (197 lines) entitled 'Natale Solum. Poema quoddam Latinum ob positos honores Academicos conscriptum'. At the end of the second poem is a note reading 'Oxoniae Maii 2ndo 1805'.
12546C: Two exercise books, the first containing an essay entitled 'A Comparison of the Characters and Conduct of Caesar and Pompey. An English Essay. Trinity College [Oxford] 1805', and the second an oration entitled 'Pro Henrico quinto Angliae Rege Oratiuncula 1804', which had been 'Read in Hall, June 5 1804'. The second book also contains extracts from the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, with marginal annotations.

12551B: A note book containing copious extracts from the correspondence exchanged between [John] Jebb [bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe, 1823-1833] and Alexander Knox, Esq., [and published as Thirty Years Correspondence between John Jebb and A[lexander] Knox, ed. Rev. C[harles] Forster, 2 vols. (London, 1834)].
12552C: A bound volume containing copies of an essay on 'The Influence of Education and Government on National Character', 1792, by Frodsham Hodson of Brasen Nose College [Oxford, later principal of the college, 1809-1822], and an essay on 'A Sense of Honour' [1805], by Reginald Heber of All Souls College [Oxford, later bishop of Calcutta, 1823-1826]. The essays were Oxford University English Prize essays and were published in The Oxford English Prize essays [see 1836 edition, Oxford, vols. 1 and 2]. Heber's work was also published separately as A Sense of Honour, A Prize Essay, Recited in the Theatre, Oxford, June 26, 1805 (Oxford, 1805).

A note book, 1803-1804, containing memoranda concerning stirrups, girth straps, harness buckles and other items of saddlery, etc., borrowed and lent by [ ]. Amongst the persons to whom items were lent were Mr. John Pugh, Cardigan, Mr. John Jones, saddler, Newcastle, and Mr. Wm. Pugh, saddler, Cardigan.

St. David's Cathedral leases

A register of leases granted by individual dignitaries of the cathedral church of St. David's of prebends, lands, etc., which were in their possession by virtue of their cathedral preferments. The volume commences with a record of the acts expedited during the visitation of the cathedral church by Bishop Nicolas [Claggett], bishop of the diocese, in 1736-1737, and a copy of the injunction issued by the bishop on that occasion, ordering the registration of existing leases already granted by individual members of the cathedral church and of all such future grants. Consequent upon this injunction, leases of the following were transcribed and registered between 1737 and 1761 (the dates in brackets are those of the actual grant) - the prebend of Meydrim with its appurtenances in Mydrim, co. Carmarthen (1731), the lordship and manor of Kinoch [sic] Craig, parish of Marthry [sic], and the rectory or prebend of Marthry, co. Pembroke (1733), the prebend of Llawhadden and a capital messuage called St. Kenocks, co. Pembroke (1717), a messuage and lands called Tyrsais in the town and fields of Carvarchell, parish of St. Davids, and the profits and chief rents of the manor or lordship of Carvarchell, co. Pembroke (1733), the rectory of Llandewy Aberarth, co. Cardigan (1737), the prebend of Llangan, cos. A daily waste book kept by a shopkeeper ?in the town or neighbourhood of Cardigan, 1 May-14 September 1797. The inside upper cover bears the name 'J. O. Harries'. Inset is a draft copy of the conditions of sale of a messuage called Penalltyn, parish of Manerdivy, co. Pembroke, to be sold at Cardigan, 23 July 1806.
