Bundle Of Correspondence And Printed Matter Labelled 'Bye-laws, 1898-1907',

Consists of a number of drafts and final versions of bye-laws passed by Machynlleth UDC between these dates. Also includes some correspondence from the Local Government Board at Whitehall dealing with confirmation and registration of the bye-laws. The bye-laws cover such subjects as control and improvement of common land; nuisances; common lodging houses; new streets and buildings; and slaughter houses.

Bundle Of Papers Labelled 'Fire Brigade, 1909-1914',

A small file of correspondence and other papers dealing with the formation of a Voluntary Fire Brigade at Machynlleth between these dates. Many letters deal with a fire which occurred at the White Horse Hotel, Machynlleth, on 28 April 1912. Of particular interest is a questionnaire sent out by the Clerk of Machynlleth UDC to various town councils in Mid and North Wales, enquiring about their fire brigades, and the replies received.

Bundle Of Papers Labelled 'Machynlleth Town Hall Co. ETC.',

A small number of letters, circulars and balance sheets relating to the 'Machynlleth Town Hall Company', established under the Companies Act, 1862. The purpose of the Company was the purchase and upkeep of a town hall, market hall and public rooms in Machynlleth. Most of the papers date from 1903-05. The collection also contains the Annual Reports of the Newtown Coffee and Cocoa House Company, Limited, for 1889, 1890 and 1891.

Bundle Of Papers Labelled 'Machynlleth, Owain Glyndwr Institute, 1910-25',

A substantial file of correspondence, press cuttings, leaflets and other papers dealing primarily with the establishment and opening of the Owain Glyndwr Institute at Machynlleth by David Davies, MP, on 20 February 1912. The collection also reflects the financial problems faced by the Institute during the war years and the efforts made to overcome these and to improve the state of the building. One file of papers deals with the appointment of a caretaker of the Institute in September 1917. The collection also contains the minute book of the Finance Committee of the Institute from 1911 to 1916.

Bundle Of Papers Labelled 'Markets And Fairs, 1903-1916',

A large file of correspondence, press cuttings, posters, bye-laws and price lists. The vast majority of the material deals with Machynlleth, although some emanates from Pwllheli. Many of the items deal with the drafting of bye-laws relating to the holding of markets and fairs and with proposed changes in the days on which these events were held.

A large file of Acts of Parliament, correspondence, legal papers and accounts relating to highways in the urban district of Machynlleth. Much of the collection consists of correspondence between Machynlleth UDC and Montgomery County Council regarding the maintenance and repair of roads.

An extensive file of correspondence, bills and receipts, statements of accounts, addresses, posters, traffic regulations, and general papers arising out of the preparations (teas, firework displays, etc.) for the following events:. The visit of Queen Victoria to Machynlleth, 24 August 1889. The visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales and other members of the royal family to Machynlleth 25-27 June 1896. Celebrations for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, June 1897. Celebrations for the Coronation of King George V, and the King's visit to Machynlleth, June 1911.

Bundle Of Papers Labelled 'Salaries Under Housing And Town Planning Act, 1909',

Small file of correspondence dealing with the levels of salaries paid to senior local government officials after the passage of the Housing and Town Planning Act, 1909. Contains the replies to a questionnaire sent out by the Clerk to Machynlleth UDC to a large number of North and Mid Wales town councils enquiring about the structure of local government and the levels of salaries.

Envelope Of Papers Labelled 'Advertisement, 1903; Cambrian Resorts Association, 1909',

A file dealing with two subjects. The first is a proposal considered by Machynlleth UDC in 1903 to issue a guide to the town at the expense of the rate-payers, a proposal which was rejected by the Local Government Board. Of particular interest are the replies to a questionnaire sent out to the local authorities of various resorts such as Blackpool and Tenby enquiring how they financed the production of their guides. Also included is a wealth of material on the discussion which took place on the same subject in 1909 when Machynlleth UDC considered joining the Cambrian Resorts Association, but eventually decided against the move. The collection includes a number of posters and brochures advertising the West Wales resorts in the early years of the century.
