Family papers and estate records of the Evans and Davies-Evans families of Highmead, Cardiganshire. -- The estate records includes rentals and inventories of the estates of Highmead, 1800-1890, Penylan in the parish of Llanfynydd, Carmarthenshire, 1817-1850, Dolgadfan and Trefeglwys in Montgomeryshire, 1850-1859, and Pantglas in Carmarthenshire, 1879-1897, and of the estate of James Evan Bayly in the parish of Llanwenog, Cardigan, 1822-1840; account books of the Highmead estate, 1757-1899; records of various estates and farms in Carmarthenshire, and Breconshire; and deeds of estates in Breconshire, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire and Radnorshire, 1549-c. 1880. -- The family and personal papers include the diaries of Anne Evans, John Jones of Blaenos, the Rev. D. H. T. G. Williams, Herbert Davies-Evans, and his son H. Manuscripts and papers of the Herbert families of Cherbury, Dolguog and Powis Castle, [1550x1600]-1808, and in particular those of Edward Herbert, 1st baron Herbert of Cherbury (d.1648), including his literary, philosophical, political and personal papers. The archive also includes political, estate and personal papers of the Herbert families of Cherbury and Powis Castle, 1565-1808. Many of the letters in the 1959 deposit are calendared in W. J. Smith, Herbert correspondence: the sixteenth and seventeenth century letters of the Herberts of Chirbury, Powis Castle and Dolguog, formerly at Powis Castle in Montgomeryshire (Cardiff, 1963).

The collection comprises material largely of Flint and Flintshire interest and includes historical material, transcripts of documents and extracts from parish registers, minutes of borough meetings, pedigrees relating to notable families of the district, papers relating to parliamentary elections, correspondence, etc.

They include the manuscript note-books of Dr Owen, and of Edward Laws, his friend and fellow worker on Pembrokeshire history. The older manuscripts include two in the hand of George Owen of Henllys; holograph letters of General Sir Thomas Picton (born at Poyston); and a rent roll of the rents belonging to the Bishop of St Davids, 1685.
