Papers of Denis Balsom, 1979-2004, comprising opinion polls and surveys relating to Welsh politics, culture and society. The collection includes pre-election opinion polls, 1979-2004, concerning voting intentions across Wales and public opinion of devolution; constituency polls, 1987-2003, carried out to assess voting intentions on a regional level; surveys on the Welsh language and culture, 1979-1995; surveys relating to social issues in Wales, 1989-1995; and television image surveys, 1979-1996.

The fonds consists of the research papers of Derrick Pritchard Webley, mainly relating to his work on the artist Penry Williams. The papers include correspondence, notes and typescript transcripts of letters relating to Williams, his works, his contemporaries and his cultural background, together with catalogues of works by Williams and other artists, and typescript drafts of chapters of Webley's posthumous work Cast to the winds: the life and work of Penry Williams (1802-1885) (Aberystwyth: National Library of Wales, 1997). Also included are papers relating to Derrick Webley's archaeological interests, in particular the palaeolithic geography of the Epirus region of Greece.

The archive comprises almost entirely of title deeds, 1621-1927, of the Derry Ormond estate, co. Carm., mainly dating from its acquisition in 1783 by the Jones family, later Inglis-Jones.

Title deeds, 1525-1907, of the Derwydd estate, mainly in Carmarthenshire, and of the families of Vaughan of Golden Grove and Llanelli, Bevan of Laugharne (including Madam Bridget Bevan, 1698-1779), Stepney of Llanelli, and Stepney-Gulston of Derwydd. There are no personal or family papers in the archive.

General correspondence, 1950-74, to Desmond Donnelly and carbon copies of letters from him, including letters form Dean Acheson, Sir Anthony Eden and Sir Roy Welensky and other prominent British and international political figures; papers relating to various topics including Pembrokeshire politics and general elections, 1916-1968, Donnelly's foreign travels and international affairs, 1949-1972, his publications, 1958-1966, the United Democratic Party, 1969-1970; a scrapbook relating to the British Empire Cricket Team, diary extracts, papers and other personal material, 1941-1974; copies and drafts of articles and speeches by Donnelly, 1949-1973; and a large group of press cuttings, 1921, 1946-1978. There is also a scrapbook belonging to John Wynford Philipps, 1897-1908.

Development Board for Rural Wales records, containing minutes and other papers of the Board and various committees, 1977-1994; general administrative files concerning the establishment of the Board, its functions and responsibilities, and correspondence with other organizations, 1966-1990; construction files containing correspondence, contracts and estate plans relating to housing and industrial developments executed by the Board, particularly in Newtown, 1968-1993; records such as correspondence, minutes, notes and other papers relating to research studies on economic and social life in Mid-Wales carried out by the Board, 1968-1995; files relating to the Board's marketing and promotional strategy, 1978-1991; and press releases, 1977-1990; Mid-Wales Development Corporation records, 1962-1979, including annual reports, 1969-1977, minutes and papers of the Board and various committees, 1968-1979, and seal registers relating to MWDC projects, 1968-1976, containing compulsory purchase orders, contracts, leases and other documents.

An additional three files relating to the Development Board for Rural Wales, being DB/CF/101/1; DB/CF/101/2; DB/CF/101/3 – (Extension to Goodall & Swanwick factories at Dolgellau; factories at Dolgellau; and extension to Marian Park Industrial Estate, Dolgellau). These remain uncatalogued, and are closed for ten years from the date of the latest document in each file.
