Papers relating to the activities of the Preseli Anti-Nuclear Group, 1981-1987, including mostly newspaper cuttings concerning the nuclear arms race, foreign affairs, peace groups and disarmament, nuclear power stations and nuclear waste, with also leaflets and correspondence.

From a mass of miscellaneous material may be noted the correspondence with the Local Government Board relating to market tolls in Llanfair and a conveyance of the market hall there, 1887-93; copies of descriptions of the bounds of the Manors of Carno, 1609, and Cyfeiliog, 1701, the parish of Llanfyllin, 1704, the forest of Brythen (Breythin), 1523, and the borough of Pool, 1906; case relating to the tithes of Llanfyllin, post 1778; terrier of the glebe of Llangadfan, 1795; battalion order books of the 4th Battalion of the South Wales Borderers, 1881-97. The documents deposited in 1966-1967 include: Parochial records of the following parishes in co. Montgomery: Guilsfield, Llanwddyn, Pool-Upper Division, Middle Division and Lower Division. Register books of baptisms of the Calvinistic Methodist churches of Beulah, New Mills, 1810-1908, and Bethany, Tregynon, 1869-83; a minute book of the trustees of the First Division of Roads in co. Montgomery, 1797-1825; and a poll of the voters for the borough of Montgomery held at Welshpool, 26 July 1837; account books of Robert Owen of Welshpool, auctioneer and valuer; Powysland Museum visitors' book, 1916-32 (also contains minutes of the Welshpool Science and Art Class Committee, 1893-1901); a minute book, 1876-84, of the 'Private Dorcas Society originally formed by Mrs. Newill ... in 1865'; Galarnad er coffadwriaeth am y diweddar Barch. John Jones o Dalsarn . . . gan Fethodist Galarus (Caernarvon), and Y Cristion mewn cyflawn Arfogaeth gan Wiliam Gurnal (Yr Ail Ran. Trefecca, 1784). The documents deposited in 1978 include: A volume in 17th century hands containing lists of tenants and encroachments within the lordships of Kerry and Kedewain; and within the lordship of Halcetor; an incomplete and imperfect 17th century document relating to inquisitions held at Newtown and Pool, 4 and 5 James [1] respectively. An estimate of work required to be done in the erection of a town hall at Welshpool for the Town Council, May 1873. A volume containing the minutes of meetings held at Welshpool, 1877, to arrange a steeple-chase, with lists of officials and accounts of the steeple-chases held, 1877-86. Notes on the history of the South Wales Borderers written in 1888. The documents deposited in 1982 include: The Order Book for Montgomeryshire Quarter Sessions, 1707-37. This volume is to be kept henceforth with the official Quarter Sessions records. A further supplementary group of miscellaneous documents, 14th-20th centuries, mainly of Montgomeryshire interest (see NLW Annual Report 1965-66, p. 57; 1966-67, p. 57; 1977-78, p. 73), including sale catalogues, 19th- 20th centuries, mostly of Montgomeryshire estates; documents, 16th-18th centuries, relating to the manor of Halcetor; and material relating to the town and parish of Welshpool. The documents deposited in 1985 include: A further supplementary group of miscellaneous documents, mid 17th century- 1975, mainly of Montgomeryshire interest (see NLW Annual Report, 1965-66, p 57; 1966-67 p 57; 1977-78, p 73; 1982-83, p 51) including documents relating to Welshpool, mid 17th century-1975, Robert Owen and Newtown, 1817-1934, the Order of Druids, c. 1891-1923, and the Ancient Order of Foresters, c. 1885- 1917.

Records of the Herbert family of Montgomery, Chirbury and Powis Castle, later earls of Powis, 13-20 cent., including records of the Powis Castle estate, including title deeds, mainly in Montgomeryshire and adjacent counties, notably Shropshire, 13-20 cent.; records of lead and silver mining in Cardiganshire, 18-19 cent.; records of the Castle Island estate, County Kerry, Ireland, 16-19 cent.; manorial records for the barony of Powis from 1549, the lordship of Oswestry from 1577, the manors of Cydewain, Halcetor and Montgomery from 1525, Chirbury from 1373, Pool from 1653, the borough of Llanfyllin from 1653, and many others; records of the borough of Llanfyllin, 1674-1820 including records of the Court of Record (borough court), 1674-1721, 1761-1763; estate rentals, 1712-1941; rentals of chief rents, 1676, 1745-1897 (mainly 1745-1817); correspondence, mainly 17-19 cent.; Montgomeryshire Chartist riots papers, and papers relating to the campaign against the proposed union of the dioceses of St Asaph and Bangor. Manuscripts and papers of Edward Herbert, 1st baron Herbert of Chirbury (1583-1648); Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive (1725-1774) and Brigadier-General John Carnac (c.1716-1800) have been removed from the archive and catalogued as separate collections.

The Powell (Newcastle Emlyn) Manuscripts belonged to Dr. T. W. W. Powell (d.1944), and consist of an essay on the history and meaning of place-names in the parishes of Cenarth and Llandyfriog; an essay on ruins in the Rhydlewis districs, South Cardiganshire; an elegy on the death of Dr. Joshua Powell, Adpar; and a history of the parish of Troedyraur, Cardiganshire.

Madocks, including his memoranda books, letters to John Williams (his agent at Portmadoc), 1806-1825, and some materials for his biography in the form of copies of letters from Ebenezer Thomas (`Eben Fardd'), John Thomas, Chwilog, Ellis Owen, Cefnymeusydd, and others; a 'statute book' of the 'Ancient and Renowned Borough of Tremadoc', 1805-1810, with an account of the Tremadoc Ball and Hunt; together with records from the Harbour Office, Porthmadog, including account books and registers of Portmadoc harbour, 1824-1917. Letters and papers 1834-1990, of and relating to the Poole Hughes family of Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire. The papers comprise letters and correspondence, printed matter, pedigrees, certificates, some photographs, deeds and other historical documents. Accumulated originally by the Rev. Canon W. W. Poole Hughes (1865-1928), warden at Llandovery College and later by his wife Bertha Cecil (nee Rhys), 1877-1962. Some later items were added by their daughter Esther.

Deeds and documents mainly concerning the Kemeys family of Bertholey, parish of Llantrisant, Monmouthshire, Oystermouth, Glamorgan, and elsewhere, 1481-1780; letter from Lord Arthur Capel to Colonel Davyes at Hawarden, 1643, and an account of the raising of the siege of Montgomery Castle, 1644.

Records of the Welsh estates of the earls of Plymouth, 1301-1844; the two most notable groups relate to the family's Alrhey estate, Flintshire, and the Van, Glamorgan, both representing estates acquired through marriage in the 18th century, including deeds, 1301-1844; and manorial records, 15th cent.-1646, including court rolls of the manors of Magor and Undy in Monmouthshire, 1586-1603. The archive contains practically no personal or family papers.

Records of the Lloyd family of Cefn, Denbighshire, and of their estates in Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire and Flintshire, mainly comprising deeds, 1422-1900, including deeds relating to lead and coal mines in Flintshire and copper mines in Caernarfonshire, 18-19 cent.; papers relating to ecclesiastical affairs, 1562-1864; and important papers of Humphrey Humphreys (1648-1712), cleric and antiquarian, and bishop of Bangor, 1689-1701, and Hereford, 1701-12, relating to his period as bishop of Hereford.

Manuscripts, estate records and family papers of the Edwards and Morrall families of Cilhendre and Plas Yolyn in Dudleston, Shropshire, including the manuscripts and papers of Morgan Llwyd (1619-1659); Colonel John Jones 'the regicide' of Maesgarnedd (?1597-1660); correspondence of the Edwards and Morrall families; papers of the Jones family of Cilhendre, descendants of Colonel John Jones; a small group of papers relating to the Hanmer family (including documents relating to the part played by William Hanmer of Fennes in the Civil War and a travel journal of Thomas Hanmer, 1728); and deeds, 1282-1869 relating to properties mainly in Denbighshire, Flint, Merionethshire and Shropshire, but also in London, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

A collection, accumulated by the Lloyd family of Plas Power, comprising an unpublished sixteenth-century treatise; annotated copies of works by Moses Williams (1685-1742) and John Worrall (d. 1771); an English-Welsh dictionary and material for a Welsh dictionary; transcripts of Welsh poetry, of an essay by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt (1592?-1666), and of George Ripley's (d. c. 1490) 'The compound of alchymy', 1471; treatises, vocabularies and other texts in Latin and Greek; genealogies of Welsh families; sixteenth-century rental accounts relating to North Wales; an account of proceedings in Parliament for the year 1620; a translation of Christopher Sutton's (c. 1565-1629) Disce mori ...; a version of Piers Plowman; and other items.
