The Dolgelley Aiding Society was founded in 1825. It met once every four weeks at the Angel Inn and was established to provide support to its members in sickness and old age. Members were offered benefits if they were unable to work because of illness or injury, and, in the event of the death of a member or his wife, money was provided for funeral expenses. Only men between the ages of 15 and 35 (this was raised to 40 by 1856) were admitted to the Society and all members were required to contribute monthly to the fund. Members were also expected to abide by the Society's rules, and fines were imposed for non-compliance.
