The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) is a voluntary organisation, promoting the study and safeguarding of Britain's historic environment, providing a forum for archaeological opinion, and aiming to improve public interest in Britain's past. It was set up in 1943 as a committee of representatives of county and period societies. CBA Wales is the group representing the objectives of the CBA in Wales, and began as the Wales and Monmouth branch in 1961. In addition to its advocacy role regarding the historic environment, CBA Wales undertakes monitoring of Listed Building consent applications and commenting on Scheduled Monument Consent applications. In the 1960s it operated a scheme for the circulation to members of offprints of articles in archaeological journals. CBA Wales publishes an annual journal, Archaeology in Wales (previously CBA Wales Newsletter).
