History

Edward Copleston (1776-1849) from Offwell, Devon, was Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, England, and Bishop of Llandaff, Glamorgan. Members of the Copleston family served as rector of Offwell, including John Gay Copleston (1801-1894) and John Henry Copleston (1841-1918). Other relatives included Ellen Hope Copleston (d. c. 1870), of Offwell, and E. L. Copleston (fl. 1917-1945), who lived at Sidmouth, Devon. The Rev. John Besly (1800-1868), fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, undertook research into the history of Devonshire families.
