Tune book, 1823-9, compiled by Juliana Isabella Mary Pennant (1808-42) of Penrhyn Castle, co. Caernarfon, first wife of Edward Gordon Douglas-Pennant, first baron Penrhyn of Llandegai, containing contemporarily fashionable music, mostly dances, a few songs (words in English, French and Italian). The only Welsh tune is 'Sweet Richard' (p. 19). Includes two nursery songs, 'Anthony Rowley' (p. 34) and 'Little Bo Peep' with words (p. 35). The sources are noted for some pieces, e.g. 'Llanidan ... 1826' (pp. 37 and 38), 'C. Ma C. St Petersburg ... 1829' (p. 69).

A survey of the state of education in, and around, the parishes of Castle Caereinon, Llanfair Caereinion and Manafon, co. Montgomery, carried out, December 1846, by representatives of local nonconformist denominations under the supervision of the Reverend Robert David Thomas ('Iorthryn Gwynedd', 1817-88), minister of Penarth Congregational chapel, Llanfair Caereinion. Memorials on the survey were submitted to the Commissioners appointed by Government to enquire into the state of education in Wales (see 544, below).

Journal of a tour of North and Central Wales from July to September 1810 by the Reverend Corbet Hue (ca. 1770-1838), Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, illustrated with ink drawings and rough pencil sketches and including a map showing his itinerary.

A volume, [16 cent., second ½], probably in the hand of Thomas Powell (d. 1588), Parc y Drewen, Whittington, co. Salop, containing a much shortened text of Humphrey Lhuyd's English version of Brut y Tywysogion, upon which version David Powel based his Historie of Cambria, now called Wales ... (London, 1584) (see Brut y Tywysogion ..., ed. by Thomas Jones (Cardiff, 1952), pp. xiv-xviii). Omissions mainly involve passages relating to events outside Wales, church affairs and the papacy, anecdotes, explanations of Welsh personal and place-names, and the arguments against Polydore Vergil. Three other copies are known: BL, MS Cotton Caligula A VI; Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ashmolean Museum MS 847; and NLW, Llanstephan MS 177. Also included are a pedigree of the kings and princes of North Wales from Cadwaladr to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (ff. iv-v verso), a painted coat of arms of Cadwaladr (f. 1), and an index of personal and place-names (ff. 168-70 verso). Six lines of English verse are added in a contemporary hand on f. 171 verso.

Notebook of John Rees (1819-1900), Granant, St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire, containing intermittent memoranda in diary form, including entries of Baptist interest, 8 January 1841-23 May 1847, and verse in Welsh. Rees family births, 1813-1836, are listed inside the front cover.

A volume containing details of receipts and disbursements, 1718-22, of the trustees of the will of Sir William Myddelton (1694-1718), Chirk Castle, co. Denbigh. Stitched into part of a lease, 1627, from Sir Thomas Myddelton (1550-1631) of property probably in Lloran, parish of Llansilin, co. Denbigh.

A volume originally used as a parish register, 1727-30, of Ystradfellte, co. Brecon (inverted text ff. 23-4 verso); and subsequently for a summary catalogue of the library of Ystradmeurig School, co. Cardigan, compiled in 1827 by Henry Hampton (ff. 1-19), with a few later memoranda. The titles, arranged under broad subject-headings, comprise mainly the works of classical authors and books on theology and religion, history, and languages, including some in Welsh. Also included (f. 22) is a petition, 1829, of the inhabitants of Ystradmeurig against Roman Catholic emancipation, in the hand of John Williams Morris, headmaster of the school, 1826-59.

Charles Letts's Office Desk Diary, 1936, with detailed entries, apparently in the hand of John Reginald Jones (d. 1964), in which he records the daily occurrences and problems he encountered as manager of Varteg Hill Colliery, Garndiffaith, co. Monmouth [owned by John Vipond & Co. Ltd]; included are references to the fears and unrest of the labour-force because of dangerous and adverse working conditions, and accounts of the writer's confrontations with individual miners.

Highway rate receipt and payment book, 1887-90, for the parish of Llangathen, co. Carmarthen.

A ledger used originally to record the accounts, 1852-3, of Ochr y Foel Lead Mine, probably in Gwernafield, co. Flint (pp. 1-47), and later the accounts, 1869-74, of Griffith Edwards, shipowner and auctioneer, and Jane Edwards, coal dealer, Barmouth, co. Merioneth (pp. 48-228 passim). The volume was finally used by Lucy Mary Morris (d. 1958), and her daughter Lucy Irene Morris (d. 1971), Porthmadog, co. Caernarfon, to record their finances, 1911-70, including share dividend and income tax returns (pp. 58-153 passim, pp. 259-74). An index is included at the beginning of the volume.

Diary for the period 30 September-9 December 1941 of Lady Megan Lloyd George (1902-66), Member of Parliament for Anglesey, 1929-51, and for Carmarthen, 1957-66, containing occasional entries relating to the progress of the Second World War with references to Winston Churchill and other contemporary figures.

Some fourteen letters, 1923-1950 (mostly 1923-1924), from Vernon Watkins to his schoolfriend, Eric V. Falk, chiefly concerned with life at Repton School and the poet's unhappiness after leaving, including two apparently unpublished poems (ff. 14-15); together with two further letters to Falk, 1923, one being from Graham B. Smith, history master at Repton, the 'Mr Holmes' of Christopher Isherwood's Lions and Shadows (London, 1938).

Eleven letters, 1854-1902, some incomplete, from Sir Llewelyn Turner (1823-1903), Parkia, Llanfair-is-gaer, co. Caernarfon, to John Breese (1830-58), town clerk of Pwllheli, and to 'Mr Wynn' [possibly Frederick George Wynn, Glynllifon, co. Caernarfon], relating mainly to the maintenance of Caernarfon Castle and harbour, and to the Royal Welsh Yacht Club.

An album compiled, ca. 1973-1988, by Margaret Joan Mills (formerly Baylis, d. 1992), containing pedigrees, photographs, copies of civil registration certificates and wills, and other genealogical memoranda, 1729-1988, concerning various branches of the Makeig family, originally from the parish of Llandygwydd, co. Cardigan; together with press cuttings and notes relating to her research.

Letters, 1942-75, to Graham F. Thomas who stood unsuccessfully as a Labour Party candidate for the Monmouth constituency in the 1950 general election, before spending some years working as a civil servant in the Sudan and Kenya. The letters relate mainly to his political interests and are from George M. Ll. Davies (6) 1943-4, James Griffiths, MP (93) 1946-75, Hilary A. Marquand, MP (69) 1945-69, Iorwerth C. Peate (28) 1942-69, and Professor William Rees (3) 1953-5.

Dyddiadur y Methodistiaid Wesleyaidd ... 1891, containing entries, in Welsh, by Owen Thomas, ?Tre-garth, parish of Llandygái, co. Caernarfon, mainly comprising reflections on his spiritual condition, and including (p. 36) a reference to his fellow-workers ('fy nghyd-weithwyr') at the Penrhyn slate quarry.

Original manuscript of the Welsh text of Saunders Lewis's address to the jury during his trial at Caernarfon Assizes, October 1936, for arson at the Penyberth Bombing School. The Welsh text, described by Saunders Lewis as 'partly strict translation but in part a separate and different composition' (see NLW MS 22951C, f. i), was subsequently published as a pamphlet Paham y Llosgasom yr Ysgol Fomio (1936).
