Papers relating to Grŵp Pennant Group [later Cymdeithas Thomas Pennant Society], an organisation established in the early 1990s by a group of admirers of Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), esquire, learned scientist and antiquary of Downing, Whitford, Flintshire. They include its constitution, 1998, biographical information on Thomas Pennant, photocopies of articles about him and a list of some of the plants mentioned by him in his writings and their present-day names compiled by Goronwy Wynne.

Documents, 1730-[c. 1752], probably accumulated by a French lawyer, Daminois, for a legal case, concerning the silver mines of Guadalcanal, Spain, and the alleged defrauding of investors in that enterprise by Lady Mary Herbert ('Demoiselle Powis'), daughter of the Marquess of Powis, and her agent Marc Antoine Mortemer.
They comprise three cross-sections of the mines, one printed, dated 1730 (f. 1), one watercolour (f. 35) and one in pencil (f. 45); a printed petition to the King of Spain from the Duc d'Estrées, Marechal of France, the Duc de Béthune and other French nobles complaining about Demoiselle Powis, [1733x1737] (ff. 3-9); a legal memoir by the lawyer Daminois, defending a Mr Privat, deceived by Demoiselle Powis and jailed, [c. 1752] (ff. 36-44); and four draft memoirs, [after 1741], in the same hand, describing the exploitation of the Guadalcanal mines from June 1725 to December 1730 (ff. 10-14), the alleged swindling of French nobles (ff. 15-20), and two documents reciting the history of the mines from the Roman period up to February 1732 (ff. 21-34).

Parochial settlements for the parish of Guilsfield, Montgomeryshire, 1837-43, including a holograph letter, 1837, from Sarah Evans, Llangollen, widow of the late James Evans, a pauper of the parish of Guilsfield, to Mr. Holywell, overseer of the poor.

Six letters and fragment of another, 1861-1864, from Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), advocate of Italian unity, to William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), one of which is written on a printed circular for subscribers to an association to succeed the Friends of Italy (ff. 1-13). Four of the letters have been published in William Rees (Hiraethog): A Memoir by his son Ebenezer Rees, ed. by H. Elvet Lewis, M.A. (Liverpool, 1915); see also NLW Journal vol. I (1940), p. 149. Also included is a postcard, 1880, from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), to Gwilym Hiraethog (f. 14).

A volume compiled by the donor in which he outlines his father's history and the 132nd (Welsh) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, entitled 'Gunner: A war journal of 1142586 Gunner Gardiner, William Drummond'.

The fonds comprises papers of Gus Jones mostly relating to his public career; there are few personal or family papers.
