Llwyn Estate Records

1952 and 1966: Llwyn estate records, mainly title deeds and abstracts of title, 1623-1932, together with a few business letters, plans, printed sale catalogues and rentals, 1855-1908, relating to properties principally in Llanfyllin (including the manor of Brithdir) and elsewhere in Montgomeryshire, and to a lesser extent in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire.

2017: Four scrapbooks (one disbound), c.1857-c.1952, eleven letter books, 1874-1906, three photograph albums, bundles of letters, 1880-1900, and three game books, 1900-1950. Bundles of deeds, letters and other papers related to the purchase and sale of properties, mainly in p. Llanfyllin, c.1851-c.1954. Manuscript 'History and topography of the hundred of Llanfyllin', by "Mechain", 1893, notes for a history of Llanfyllin, c.1893-1916, and a typescript 'History of the parish of Llanfyllin from 1862 to 1913', by J. Marshall Dugdale, c.1916.

Records of the Lleweni estate, Denbighshire, and papers of the Salusbury family of Llewenni, consisting mainly of letters, deeds and other legal documents. The letters are mainly to or from members of the Salusbury family, 1546-1645, the greater number belonging to the last fifteen years of that period, and relating to Sir Thomas Salusbury, the second baronet. The letters are mainly family correspondence and business letters from estate agents, lawyers, and servants of the household. A few are in the nature of news-letters, particularly those written by James Lloyd, [c. 1640], when relations between Charles I and his Parliament were becoming strained. The deeds and legal documents, 1357-1800, relate to the Llewenni estate in Anglesey, Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire and Flintshire.

A collection consisting mainly of the manuscripts, correspondence and other papers, [16 cent., second ½]-[1909x1925], of the Lloyd family of Hafodunos, Denbighshire and Wigfair, Flintshire, including a considerable amount of correspondence to and from John Lloyd ('The Philosopher'), one of the most notable members of the family. The collection also includes correspondence of members of the Wynn family of Gwydir, the Clough family of Plas Clough and Hafodunos, the Holland family of Berw, the families of Carreglwyd, and the Rev. Richard Howard, Denbigh (matters relating to lead, iron and mineral resources in Flintshire); together with Hafodunos and Wigfair rentals and accounts and accounts relating to lead and copper mines in North Wales.

Among the composers represented in the archive are Robert Bruce, Dilys Elwyn Edwards, John Edwards, J. R. Heath, Alun Hoddinott, Arwel Hughes, Idris Lewis, Ian Parrott and Grace Williams.

Papers, 1825-1912, of, or acquired by, the painter Henry Clarence Whaite, including correspondence, bills and vouchers, press cuttings, exhibition catalogues and related printed material, reflecting his work as an artist and as President of both the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Cambrian Academy; together with papers, 1825-1862, of the Whaite family of Manchester, and papers, 1873-1913, of the artist's daughter, Lily Whaite, a member of the Gwynedd Ladies' Art Society.

Twenty-six letters to H. Clarence Whaite from Frederick Alfred Slocombe, and his nephew Shirley Slocombe. These remain uncatalogued.

A collection of additional letters, 1900-1904, to Lily Whaite from her future husband, John Harris, Vicar of Harlech. This group remains uncatalogued.

A further consignment of papers were acquired by the Library, including diaries and journals documenting all Whaite's paintings and the exhibitions they were sent to from the early 1870s onwards. This group remains uncatalogued.

Papers of the Stepney family of Prendergast, Pembrokeshire, and Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, mainly deeds relating to their estates in those counties, 1541-1787, including deeds concerning the working of coal in the Llanelli area of Carmarthenshire in the 17th-18th centuries; and family and business letters, 1706-1829, of the Stepney family including letters relating to the trading enterprises of Sir Thomas Stepney, seventh baronet, 1749-1767, which include letters from the masters of his ships, from other business firms, and from his agents in the main seaports of Wales and England as well as at continental centres of trade, such as Brest and Lisbon. Despite its title, there are no papers relating to the Cilymaenllwyd estate.
